Ok i searched and didnt find what i needed. I have a 89 ranger 2.3 5 speed 2wd and id like to swap a 4.0 or 2.9 and 4x4 into it. i know i need the motor, 5 speed trans and transforcase, engine wiring, computer, front and rear axles(dana 35 and 8.8) drive shafts, trans crossmember, radiator and exhaust. What needs to be done with the motor mounts, fuel system? is the dana 35 a easy swap? anything im missing? Ideas?

I am in the same boat as your are. I have a 1990 ranger that I am trying to swap a 91 4 liter into and I can not get any sort of response either. I have a question that you might be able to answer. Will the engine harness of the 4 liter plug in to the 2.3L cab wiring harness and work properly?

I am just in the early stages of my swap and am tryign to sort out the little details.

Thanks in advance
Jason

get some evtm's and search for other threads.i've seen the answers in mine and other swap threads

You've pretty much got it all right...

Use the motor mounts that come with the motor, they should bolt to your new crossmember.

Once you have the 4x4 crossmember, the D35 will bolt right it in, remember to get the axle pivot brackets, radius arms and brackets. I'm not sure on the Coil buckets....maybe someone else will chime in.

The giant plug on the drivers side firewall will probably plug in just fine, but I can imagine there will be some wires you will need to swap around in the plug.

I wish I could help more but I've never worked on a 4 bangerranger

Looks like there is a lot of us in the same 4.0 liter boat. Since my 2.3 died, I figured its my excuse to drop in a better performing engine and then I might be happy with my 12 year old truck.

Has anybody successfully done the swap before?

I posted a thread in the General Truck forums.. One reply was that I would have to swap over the fuel lines since the 2.3 doesn't have a fuel return line to the tank.

Another problem I have found is that the 2.3 engine is rare to come by in the state of Oklahoma, and those who have them in stock want a fortune for them. I can find them all day long outside of my state for 125.00 - 200.00 w low mileage (150K or less). Here, people are wanting 500 + for the 2.3 liter. That is one of the main reasons other than the gutlessness of the 2.3 I am looking at getting the 4.0.
