My credo
It is what it is.
I have a 86 Ranger, the motor that came out of it was a 91-94 3.0. I got a 99 4.0 out of an explorer that I am wanting to put in my Ranger. I noticed the motor mounts we different. I was wondering it the mounts out of the explorer will work on my ranger. I know that I will have to get the wiring harness and computer from a explorer. any help would be appreciated.

I can't see why the '99 mounts wouldn't work. (If you ever wonder about parts, look up both applications on a parts store website and compare the part numbers it returns.)

If you're not gonna go for the '99 parts, then look in the junkyards/craigslist for a 90-92 4.0 Ranger, it'll have everything you need.

I won't do another swap without a suitable donor, but that's just me. I spent ~$1000 getting the 4.0 in.

The Explorer parts are similar (computer is interchangeable and supposedly tuned for a little more torque). The wiring can be used (I did) but does have some minor differences. Mainly the fact of the taillight wiring running inside the Explorer instead of outside the Ranger.

When you pull the wiring harness, whatever you decide to use, take BOTH sides of the big white plug. Cut the wiring inside the cab. Unless of course you are going to or already are using the newer dash. Then it's plug and play...

not sure about those particular years, but i just put a 95 explorer engine in my 97 ranger. the explorer mounts did not work, had to reuse the 97 mounts.

I would get an ecu from a 95 or older to keep it obd 1 and simpler. 91-94 block 95tm heads.

The 99 Explorer will have different mounts and even the motor mount brackets on the block will be different. You'll need to get those parts from a TTB/TIB truck.
