im planning to do a 4.0 swap in my 83 ranger 4x4. rite now im doing a body swap, the truck im using for parts is a 85 ranger. so basically ill be using the electrical and wiring system from a 85 ranger . instead of putting in another 2.8 i was thinking of doin a 4.0 swap. i can do the engine swap, my only problem will be wiring, is there a wiring harness already made for the 2.8 to 4.0 swap that i can buy online , instead of splicing wiring harnesses?and if so where would i find it at??

no sorry, no cheap harness.get some factory EVTM's and start from there.you'll almost need a parts 4.0l donor to get it done

The best way to start with an '85 cab is to remove the entire dashboard, interior wiring and engine bay harness as a set, burn them to recover the copper wire as scrap and start from scratch with a dash from an '86-88 Ranger.

BTW, if you wanna pay travel costs I can bring the parts and help you install them:)

finally someone in the same boat as me not meaning to thread jack but im putting in a whole engine tranny and transfercase from a 93 exploder auto into a 85 ranger with a 2.8 manual what is the best way of going about that i have a 86 ranger 2.9 auto for parts and i also have most of the parts off the exploder and another question is how to rig up the fuel system

Same deal on over here . 86 Ranger 2.9/5spd out 91 Exploder 4.0/auto Swapping in motor/trans/engine and dash harness, column, dash, pedals, carpet front half and maybe the front clip too. whole dash deal seems the way to go.

swap the whole dash or deal with this, 92 explorer 4.0 into a 84 BII

I used a 92 4.0 in my 85 ranger it was pretty east I only had to splice into about 5 wires from that big mess of wires from the 4.0 to get it to run

I bought the b2 from someone who was in the middle of the swap. right now its an electrical nightmare.

Fawk that.

I hate dealing with previous owners failed attempts at things...

I usually tear it all out and start from scratch, my way. That way, I know how it will end up - working.

X2^^ Sometimes the easiest way through a rats nest is to remove it altogether and locate a new donor
