So I just picked up a cheap wrecked 97' Explorer. I bought it for the interior, but the thing runs great. I was wondering if the 4.0 would mount up to my 2.3's 5-sp manual (it's a 97 ranger), and if the clutch set/ flywheel would work (they're almost new)?

Thanks!
Cal

nope. the bell pattern is different, i dont know about the clutch. i'd assume that a 4.0 would shred a 2.3 clutch anyways.

The clutch isn't an issue, as it's got a lifetime warranty!!! hahaha, but the tranni will be a deal breaker. I wonder if anyone makes an adapter plate?

Nope. The 4.0 trans shouldn't be terribly hard to find though.

Any idea what they're selling for? I really don't need another project, but I bet a short bed, single cab, 5-spd with a 4.0 would be fun!

i ended up paying about $300 for mine. and while you probably couldnt sell yours for that much, you could at least offset part of the price. btw, there's probably at least one or two for sale on the forums right now. maybe in a part out thread.

Where are you located?
