so i finished up the swap. got all the sensors for the trans hooked up that i damaged pulling from the explorer. got my custom driveshaft in went to test run the vehicle and im getting no power to the dash stereo or motor.... My headlights are working fine... I dont see anything not hooked up. I swapped dashboards ecu engine harness etc i dont see anything not hooked up and my fuses all seem to be good. PLEASE HELP. Ive been at this project for a solid 2 weeks straight and cant figure this out... cant believe i got everything together myself... Was a real test and now Im just plain discouraged from this. the ranger is a 1990. had a 2.9 v6 auto trans in it... pulled it and put a 4.0 with manual trans. hence the dash and ecu swap. all pedals are hooked up. i cant seem to figure this out.

What year was your donor? Are you sure all the wiring matches up between the 2 harnesses?

Was an improper ground. Truck is running now. Now my next issue. Speedo thinks its going faster than what it is. I believe its the vehicle speed sensor for the 91 explorer transmission is the culprit. Didnt swap rear ends so the rear end is still the 1990 rangers 2.9l auto rear end. Anyone know what vehicle speed sensor will correct my speed?

youve left us guessing without much usable info. i'd bet that the one from your ranger will work, since its the one that matches your axle ratio. are these trucks auto or manual? what gear ratios? and why is this urgent?

There is no vehicle speed sensor responsible for speedometer operation on RBVs until 1995.

The speedo issue is pretty simple. You used the Explorer's transfer case, didn't you. Yes you did. And the Explorer had different gears than your Ranger.

I hope you still have your old transfer case. If you do, go grab the speed sensor off the t-case and stick it back in the truck. It will have the correct drive gear on it.

Sorry I swapped a 4.0 from a 1991 explorer and the manual transmission into my 1990 ranger that was a 2.9l auto previously. So from what you guys are saying is that I just need the speed sensor from the original transmission That was in my ranger before the swap and that should fix my speedo and my rpm gauge? Since I didn't swap rear ends?
And I'd say its urgent because its my dd and I don't want to get pulled over for the speedometer not reading correctly. Hope that clears things up

Thank you. I'll be making a thread on everything I had to do to make things work and the issues I encountered while doing the swap to make it easier for other people. Like the driveshaft I had to get custom made and the Mazda neutral safety switch I had to get and splice the old pigtail onto it since everywhere I went didn't have a neutral safety switch for a manual 91 ford explorer. All the places i went came up with four and five prong ones. And other issues. Also found some awesome 89 Thunderbird seats I'll be putting in soon.

Sounds good..........for future reference---What component was the loose ground wire coming out of?

I am a little confused by a few things you say you had to do.

Why did you have to have a custom drive shaft made? M5OD and A4LD are the same length, your old drive shaft should have fit fine.

The clutch switch that is correct to a 91 would be a 4 or 5 pin cylinder-type unit that clips around the master cylinder rod. What style switch did you have?
