when its freezing temperatures outside my starter stays on and cranks the engine for about 30 seconds, i can shut the engine and the ignition off and it still sits there and cranks, its a huge problem, i changed the solenoid on the inner fender and its still not fixed.

huh...if its not the solenoid on the fender then i would think its got to be in the ignition switch at the base of the steering column.

next time its doing it, pull the small wire off the solenoid on the fender, see if it stops.

im pretty sure i tryed that once but ill check again

if it still spins with the smaller wire pulled off the solenoid, then the solenoid is the problem. if it shuts off after disconnecting the smaller wire, then the problem lies in the ignition switch.

when last winter was around, my starter worked fine but had trouble disengaging for a couple seconds. Colder it got, longer it would stick. Im not sure what the deal was but with winter coming up i know ill have to check this out cause i dont think the starter will make anougher winter. Did you find anything out yet?

It could simply be time to disassemble the starter clean the congealed water contaminated grease out of it and reassemble.

BUT that being said I think it's a bad idae for someone who has difficulty
diagnosing the specific nature of a starter problem to get INSIDE a starter
to determine a further detail of the malfunction...

If I were having such an issue there are a few things I'd do to diagnose
(harder to explain than to do) then I'd swap out the offending part
(I have spares of most everything)

If it were a "Gummed" starter bendix I'd replace it... with the starter on the bench,
at my convenience, sometime L-O-N-G after simply swapping out the starter with a spare.

Allan if he shuts her down and the bendix is the problem the engine WILL shut down.. However if it keeps cranking then there is lectric entering the starter. This lectric is a result of a malfunctioning solenoid or switch...seems to me anyways.

You do realize that the 4.0 starter solenoid is on the starter don't you?

If the bendix isn't disengaging it will spin, and of course make a horrible racket, as long as the flywheel is turning.

To the casual shadetree mechanic the effect is indistinguishable

And it's the cause you are trying to diagnose, the symptom only
points the way.

hes saying he turns the ignition off and the starter still turns the engine over (trying to start the vehicle with the ignition off).

a stuck bendix would make a lot of racket until he turned the engine off and everything came grinding to a stop.

i guess we need the OP to clearify his post a little more.

if you have remote start on your truck check that, them things suck and go bad all the time

Jones it don't matter where the solenoid is.. A stuck solenoid can do what is described no matter WHERE it is located. The dude says he has to hit the roll-over switch to turn it off.. THAT alone should tell us it ain't the bendix. But MY money is on the switch.

if it is a bad solenoid (I don't think it is), you still have to replace the started.
