4.0 starter problem


Yeah... it usually means it's worn out internally. Worn brushes... burnt commutator... worn bushings... etc...

Clean the mating surface on the bell housing good. Don't let things fall into the bell housing. While you're there.... clean the engine ground cable too. That will give you starter issues if it isn't clean and tight.
 
Update; I know it's been a couple few days but wanted to update, might help someone else maybe.

No place within 50 miles had my starter 🙄 So I clean it, very good, was looking brand new. Had it tested. Starter was working fine, put it back on and my truck has never started so easy. Probably starts to good now for a Ranger!

So fyi, every so often clean under the hood and truck to keep the mud, dirt down to a minimum.

Could be that removing it and reinstalling it cleaned corrosion off the terminals. Just a little rust can cause big problems on grounds. Water splashing and mud caking everywhere certainly doesn't help.
