4.0 Starter diffrences Auto/Manual

What exactly is different between the 4.0 stater for a auto transmission vs the one for the manual transmission? fyi 1994 4.0

the nose cone of starter is longer than one I just cant remeber wich one.

So it is possible to swap the nose cone and/or the starter drive from one to the other? Reason I ask is I have the auto and I was given (as in free) a rebuilt starter for a MT.

I would think you would need to swap the armature and most of theold starter so you would end up with nearly the complete old starter when you were finished.

there is also the distance the lever inside moves that actually pushes out the starter gear. if you just change the nose cone it will hit the end and give you problems as well. best bet would be to try and swap some parts and do a no-load bench test and check to make sure the start is operating properly prior to installing it.... good luck

FYI: Diffrences in Starter

The automatic has a longer nose cone. The only other difference is length of the shaft of the starter drive assembly. Everything else is the same including the gears & arm that the solenoid pulls to engage the gear to flywheel.

In my case I just swapped the nose cone and complete starter drive assembly. I believe you could swap the starter drive shaft between the two but the old one looked fine, so used the whole assembly.
