A ex room mate ran my 2000 ranger with a half quart of oil in the motor. I traded a saw for a motor from a rolled mercury mountaineer that had egr. The motor has 65k on it and runs at least. It was manufactured at the same plant and in in tge same month of production as my 4.0L. Everything hooked up beautifully and I swapped out the o2. We cannot get power to the pcm do to the pats system. We recoded the keys and we will be changing the transceiver out next. Starter tested good. Truck turns over when by passed. Any Ideas on what to try next?

did you not dress it with your exhaust and induction? and keep your pcm?.....or was there a battery issue causing the pats issue from sitting?

I did not change my exhaust manifolds out (cracked multiple spots), kept my pcm (donor not available) and I have my old in take on the side. The old wiring harness was rat finx to Hell as well and the donor had a good one. Donor pcm was not avaliable.

Not sure if I should get a ecm or a wire harness and manifolds.

i see .

fun fun .

well ... i would say running the old harness just to try ... as those explorer harnesses can be a bit different. at least from a dol perspective .. have to look at the pats deal. therr are variations of that across so ..

how do you know its a pats issue

Theft light won't turn off and power is cut to fuel, ignition and ecm

So we got it running, had to swap the pcm and then swap it back. The pats had a false positive for theft (showed the code and was cutting power) and that opened

Got it running. Swapped the pcm out and then back again. The pats had shut it down so we figured try it and it worked. Now the starter doesn't want to turn over with the key but, it starts when jumping posts, and the engine runs like a champ.

may be something in the nds circuit stopping the key then....could be simple.

good deal. i have seen them lockup from just a battery change or low battery and roll over to the point they fail to roll over. not supposed to do that, but they do.

i detest the pats and vats ect... i sometimes work where 30-50 below is a thing and have seen that and the other systems from gm nearly kill people from a simple key issue.

i know if i were to steal a vehicle i would simply be bringing a unlocked ecm with me. takes 20 seconds to swap the ecm and plug in the bypass relay with an electric driver if you are actually stealing cars for a living....

Fords of that era were able to delete EGR by changing the camshaft grind to allow a bit of mixture dilution (reversion) at low engine RPM. Pretty cool.

Only lasted for a few years before the EPA requirements got stricter.
