I own a 1998 ford ranger 4.0 6cyliner xlt. I have been interested in getting a programer for my truck but dont know which one to get. I would like that saves stock settings so i can use it and not void my warranty. but of course im also looking for some power and torque increase. I have looked at Hypertech and Jet chips but im not to sure about either...

Any suggestions?

The basic idea that a "programmer" will increase power, torque or performance
is based on a false premise.

SOME performance inport cars are "limited" by their factory programming
for reliability, safety or emissions requirements.

SO on some (mostly "rice") machinery "reprogramming" accesses performance
that is programmed out for the reasons above.

Ona 4.0OHV which is in essence a truck engine simply doesn't have all
that much more to give without first making mechanical changes
(cylinder head porting, aftermarket cam, compression increases or forced induction)
to have some purpose.

Of course a company that sells you programmed "chips" won't tell you
that because they'd be cutting their own financial throats.

Like the power claims for the various cold air intake systems.
I can't help wondering how many dead pidgeons were clogging
up the stock airbox that they removed...

I look at my 1993 flat air filter and laugh at the idea that a larger filter
is going to gain me power because on the 7.5liter 1989 F450 I had for
a fifteen years made 245hp on a filter that was the same length and
was 3/4" wider...

Excuse those that wonder why "I don't get it" when they quote grotesquely
optimistic power gain claims for whatever snake oil some aftermarket part
makes has the nerve to claim...

I wouldn't bother with a generic tune. Scan through the site and you'll see some good custom tuners that can work magic into these engines. It won't be a rocket ship, but a difference you will definatly feel. If your truck is an auto, they can change the shifting characteristics, too.

Programmers--------WORK GREAT ON MOST CARS AND TRUCK-----IF YOU GET THE RIGHT ONES ----a GOOD FRIEND OF MINE RUNS A PERFORMANCE SHOP he uses them all the time on Mustangs and ford truck-----Drive one like it came from the factory and then program it-----IT just like night and day. They are not cheap -but the HP makes the diffences.:yahoo::yahoo:
