I have a question for everybody I just bought a 96 ranger and some one has cut the exhust off of it and put duals on it the pipes are inch and 7/8's from the front all the way back into glass packs it dose not have a lot of power and sounds like crap could the pipe size be to small any help or ideas would be great thanks ahead of time for the help.

I would say the pipes are too small, i have a 2.9 V6 and im running 2 1/4 inch pipes, and those i would consider pretty small too. I would wither do 2 1/4 or 2/12 if i was you.

Power shouldn't be harmed by them pipes. You don't speak about the cats.. Where is the original pipe cut and divided into two pipes. You say "front" but that could be almost anywhere.

It'd be nice to know the gear ratio and the tire size.. both of which have more to do with power than the dual pipe size.

sorry cats are gone they cut the y pipe and made it duals that way it has 3.73 gears 36/12.50/16 supper swampers tsl's and a five speed.

Well!!

Your lack of power comes from NOT having the cats and the OX sensors..
BUT far worse gobbeling up power is them 36's and the 3:73 gears.

I betcha that thing wouldn't pull a sick whore off a potty! Just getting it rolling should cost ya a clutch a year!

Ya need gears for sure.. 4:88's would be my first choice. It might be neat looking but it ain't never gonna cut it with those gears.

I have 2-1/4 duals on a 5.4 and it breathes just fine...

Larger pipes will give you more power on the top end. OEM pipe will give you more low-end grunt on the bottom. For running larger tires, I'd drop the gear ratio (4.10:1 for 4.0L) and go with one 2-1/4" pipe.

I currently run 4.88's and 35's. If I was to do it again, I would go with the 5.13's. The difference between the 3.73's and the 4.88 or 5.13 will be a HUGE difference. :icon_thumby:

thanks for all the help looks like I will be getting some gears.

Anything more than 1-7/8" per cylinder bank is a waste of pipe
