4.0 ping

My truck starts to ping anywhere near half throttle in pretty much any gear after 1st. Even if I am crusing at 3000 or more rpm's in second gear it will do it. I cleaned the MAF and the Haynes manual says that no timing adjustments are possible on the 4.0's.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

Try higher octane gas.

high octane gas works for me but i think that is just a temp fix until it gets worse. Check this out in the tech library http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/4_0_Page.html. There is a thing at the bottom about tightening intake manifold bolts, i havn't gotten a chance to try it yet.

Hmmm ok I'll have to check out those bolts.

And there is no reason I should have to run anything higher than 87 gas. There is some reason its pinging and although using higher octane gas may stop the pinging, it will not fix that problem.

Hey I had the same ping problem on my '94 4.0L but mine also stopped goin into overdrive. i cleaned the MAF but that doesnt work worth crap try a new or reman MAF and that should fix your problem it worked great on mine!!

hey i had the same problem, i cleaned my MAF but that didnt do crap so i just bought a reman MAF from autozone ($70 plus core) and it fixed iot no problem and it gave me a ton of my power back (barely hittin it and i can light 'em up!!!!)

Well what do you know.....I tightned those lower intake manifold bolts up (the weren't even that loose....about a half a turn a piece) and it doesn't ping anymore! At least not in second gear around my neighborhood. This weekend I'll take it out on the streets.

And it was a pain in the ass, but the number 3 and 4 bolts were 1/2 inch....at least I'm pretty sure. They sure as hell weren't 10's like that link says...all the rest were though.
