I've had two rangers, my first being a 2001 Ranger EDGE with the 3.0, and my new one being the 2006 FX4 Level II with the 4.0 SOHC. there is a huge difference in performance, i know that obviously, but id like to hear how much hp and torq you can get out of the 4.0 SOHC. I know the stock numbers are 207 hp and 238 torq, which isn't rated at the wheels. Im almost positive its a 15% loss through the drive terrrain, and its running about 176 hp to the wheels.

But again anyone have any idea how much Horsepower and Torque you can get out of the 4.0 SOHC?

Thanks.

haha umm, im talking probably basic things, say headers, CAI, throttle spacer, exhaust, and programmer. I dont think i want to put my nice size hole in my wallet trying to dig for a supercharger or stroker kit.

The OEM intake is already a CAI! Don't throw your money away! The only way to get a substantial increase in performance is to: 1) Increase engine displacement 2) Go to forced induction .... and these cost big $$$

And, welcome to TRS!!!

See my first truck i had was the 2001 ranger with the 3.0 in it. i had alot of money in it, K&N CAI, programmer, headers, exhaust. and a substantial amount of money in the exterior and interior of the truck, it was a nice truck. ofcourse i got tired of the 2wd and traded it in on the 2006 fx4 level II, 4wd being the main reason. but i noticed that in the 3.0 when i first added the CAI it added alot more juice to the engine i guess you'd want to say, yeah it sounded totally different but it seemed to pick up more through the full RPM range, so are these 4.0s totally different? better stock intake? or would just spending like 15 bucks and converting the box filter over into a cone filter be sufficent enough to help alittle on hp? im not just stuck on the CAI, im getting ready to drop an exhaust on the truck and from what ive been reading K&N CAI offers 13.45 hp gain, 19 ftlbs torque, the programmer offers about the same give alittle, and the headers through exhaust would get about close to those, so simple math i was estimating about say from 176whp stock to about roughly 220whp. or flywheel rated say from 207 stock to about 255 rough est.

What you experienced with your 3.0L is called "placebo effect"!!

"K&N CAI offers 13.45 hp gain, 19 ftlbs torque"

Those are K&N numbers.....do you think they would say there was no improvement?

With CAFE standards today, vehicle manufacturers DO NOT design restrictive intakes! They design their engines to be as efficient as possible!
The only thing your going to get is a lighter wallet, NOTHING ELSE!!

Thanks for the help, ill look into other things then before i turn towards these things then.

Your welcome! I hate to see youngsters throw their money away on useless performance mods!!! As previously posted, significant performance increases
cost big $$$, and this doesn't address reliability, and safety issues.

yeah, i dont want to waste my hard earned money and i need the vehicle to be reliable, its my daily driver, and only has 38k miles on it.

Thanks again though for the help.

Yeh I think the 4.0 SOHC motor would have plenty of go for a ranger. Do you have any plans for a lift and bigger tires? If that comes the best thing to do would be to re-gear to better use the motors power. What gears do you have on it now? 4.10s?

yeah its got the 4.10 torsen rear end. i dont know if im going to lift it, i havent decided and i know id want mud terrain tires and those would be gone in like 6 months cause i drive abit of highway. so i dont feel like digging in my wallet for a grand twice a year for tires, plus i have a winter set, and chrome summer set of wheels so id have two pairs of tires to buy for. i dont know yet as far as plans for it. i just need some ideas ran through me so i can decide. but id like to get it putting over 200 hp to the wheels. its rated at 207hp but thats before it hits the driveterrain. and its about a 15% loss through that so the 4.0 sohc is getting 176 whp approx.

Howdy casto...

You can install the K&N cai and what you will get is more NOISE and more dirt in your TB.
You can install headers and a complete exhaust system... What you will get is more NOISE.
You can install a TB spacer. What you will get is laughs from those of us that KNOW.
Drive the Ranger like it was built and you will be happy. For sure don't put taller tires on it..unless you absolutely HAVE to have them for serious offroading.
My 02 FX4, as built, gets 18mpg on a bad day and 22 on a nice hiway ride. It has more power than I have ever needed to use up. I'm a happy feller.
Big JIm :icon_thumby:

HI!... Don't listen to the NAY SAYERS. The 4.0L in the RANGER responds very well to bolt-ons. I ran a high 15 second e.t bone stock. With just a DERALE electric fan, cai (custom), and a ASP crank pulley, I now run a 14.6E.T. But apparently those mods don't work.......................:icon_rofl:

He said he wanted to keep his truck reliable, every mod you have done will make your truck less reliable, with very little in return!!!

HI!... Actually it's more reliable than stock. Electric fan = more H.P/TQ, better fuel economy. Plus I can run the fan to cool down the truck when the engine is not running. Can't do that with the JUNK clutch fan.

Underdriven crank pulley = Slows down the accessories, hense not wearing them out as quickly, frees up H.P/TQ, gets better fuel economy.

CAI (custom fabricated) = true cold air set-up, less restrictive than stock paper filter, frees up H.P/TQ, better fuel economy.

15.8E.T to 14.6E.T. I've got a best of 28MPG on the highway. Yup your right, showed no gains at all.......

HMMMM ya........:thefinger:
