4.0 or 302 in IN

In Indiana we have to emissions test our vehicles and they are pretty tough the b2 barley passed last year. I am thinking about upgrading from the 2.9 to a 4.0 or 302. Was wondering what i may have to do to make it pass emissions or what if i can go with historic plates then it wont have to pass emissions right?

move out of NW Indiana... the rest of the state does not have emissions testing.

I don't know how the emissions testing are set up, but some states do not allow engines that were not available to the year/ make/ model from the factory. Some will allow an engine swap if the engine is same year or newer and all emissions controls are in place and working correctly.

I will say it will probably be easier to make your current setup pass emissions than it will if you swap in a different engine. If it is marginal, next time emissions testing comes around give it a complete tune up, new plugs, new air filter, new fuel filter and replace the o2 sensor. Run some seafoam through a few tanks of gas a week or two before going in, and do a seafoam treatment of the intake as well. (might even do that before the tuneup.)
