4.0 OHV to SOHC

Its a 2000 Ford Ranger 4.0 OHV (When I bought it the guy put in a 4.0 OHV but left the original fuel pump harness from the old 3.0 EFI, which im not sure is affecting my performance. But I plan going to sohc once this engine lets go and I was going to buy an 04 Ford Ranger engine off of a site, and was wondering what ill need? Right now I have a M50D-R1HD with four wheel drive which hopefully will bolt to the newer motors.
Any help would be great.

I am helping a guy I know work through basically this exact swap. He has ended up buying a whole parts truck with a blown up engine for the wiring harnesses due to minor mismatches that are making the project.... troublesome.

Yeah if I can find a totaled new ranger I'll buy that and make my life a hell of a lot easier but I never see one auctioned where I live . I would do a 5.0 swap but I don't want to change out my transmission and transfer case for it.
