I finished up putting a new motor and trans in my truck last night. I got the engine from a wrecking yard for $450. It came out of a totaled 1994 explorer with 80K on it and was classified as a "grade A part", which probably doesn't mean much in a wrecking yard. I filled it with fresh synthetic. Now when I started it up it took a few cranks for it to wake up, and when it started, it had a loud tapping noise. Now that noise has quieted down quite a lot, but I can't tell if it's going away completely. I'm afraid it's not going away. I've heard these engines may need to be driven a bit before the noises go away, if they've been sitting for a while. Can anyone tell me if this is normal at all or did I get a bad egg? I got a 30 day warranty with the engine so I can take it back there on Monday if I need to. Someone please tell me I do not need to do this again...
