Does anyone have the physical dimensions of a 4.0 handy?

Total length of block, complete height (including oil pan, and intake), width at the heads, width at the skirt, exact placement of motor mounts, etc...

I'm hoping someone has a link or image they can post, it would be greatly apprieciated.

Just curious why do you want to know?

I'm in the design stage of my next buggy project.

Mid-engine, independant front and rear, just big enough to hold the driveline and a driver.

I'm a truck driver, so I'm not home very much. I'm just trying to get as much of the planning and design done as I might not get the chance to pick up a donor Ranger for a while.

Oh ok, well i think there is a list of ford engine demsinsions floating around the site somewhere. But i will check a couple of my sources real quick.

Thanks for the link, though it doesn't have the specific info I wass looking for, it will be usefull.

Time for plan "B"

Find a 4.0 ranger parked at a truck stop somewhere and crawl under it with a tape measure.

.....and try not to get my ass kicked in the process.....

Hahaha, good luck, Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Well, I can't give you width or height figuires, but I can tell you
the LENGTH of a 4.0 engine.

From the bellhousing flange to the front surface of the vibration damper
a 4.0 engine is 23.5" long.

Having built a few tube frame cars - I'd strongly suggest you get some parts from someone and build a mockup engine. (If you are going to put a 4.0 in it - don't you have one?) It will help with motor mount location, checking CG, angle of the drive train, fitting the rear axle, radiator hose routing, exhaust routing, induction routing - you gotta keep sand out of this thing if it is to be a "dune" buggy. Being a truck driver you might get on the CB and find someone who will give you a blown motor to get it out of the garage!! Heck if you go through Pennsylvania - AllanD probably has one.

Thank you for the advice. I'm actually going to try and make this thing street legal, kinda like the little tube frame sports cars you see more and more. The redneck in me wants to make it 4x4, and use it on the trails here in the midwest, but I really think I want a go-fast tar baby instead. I'm going to be using an IRS 8.8, with a pinion yoke splined to mate directly to the transmission. Kinda like how the dragster guys do it.

My design so far has it looking alot like a F1 or indy car. One seat. radiators in sidepods on either side of the driver, pedals will be right inbetween the front suspension. Really low profile, not much taller than it needs to be to cover the engine.

I get worked up just talking about the thing, can wait to start building it.....

Too bad I don't ever go that far east.... Anyone in the Twin cities area of MN have one laying around?

Wild Hare

I think all of us have a couple of things we'd like to build except for roundtoits, and cubic dollars. Popular Mechanics showed how to build a Wild Hare sports car back in the early 60's when I was a paperboy - very, very simple according to them. Today, I realize it would take someone with AllanD's access to a wrecking yard and experience with things mechanical to build the Wild Hare . . . still have the magazine though.

Tube frame, too much power, able to go anywhere, but street legal. Yeah, I want one of those too. Maybe after I fix this darn Ranger.

Hope we see lot's of pictures of your RBV.
