ok here is my conundrum...

i have a 93 4.0, 4x4, ext cab... my valvetrain is hit and i have been saving money to either swap in a sohc or rebuild the top half of my existing motor. well i came across this motor on craigslist, the person who has it says its for a late model ranger, 98-00, its a ford crate motor from what i was told as well. so im super excited about it considering its brand new and he wants a grand for it which is $200 more than what it would cost to rebuild just my valvetrain.

now i know there were at least 3 different head designs used throughout the life of the OHV and the computers had a different tune due to this and other things like the tranny, etc.

where i need help is what computer do i need to use or would i be able to use my existing computer. also, where can i find some sort of i.d. number on the block to find what year its actually meant for?

As long as it's an OHV 4.0, it should be ok with the 93' PCM.

OHC will cause all kinds of issues.

id go with the new motor, not much more and everything is new

Make sure both engines use or do not use cam position sensors, other then that swap ALL your sensors over to the new engine taking off anything that your motor did not come with.
