I have a 1991 4.0 ltr in a reg cab Ranger. 3" pvc snorkel for air intake. My y-pipe has the cat removed, 3' of straight pipe (2.25") welded on to it. Not sure what to buy for a muffler. Don't want it to loud (have a 5000km trip soon) but definately want to hear it! I was thinking about Flowmaster, but went to my local performance shop today and the guy there said a Flowmaster on a V-6 would sound like crap. He recommended Magnaflow. Not sure if he just gets more commission on Magnaflow or what, but he sure was a knob! Hopefully someone on here has some suggestions. I'm getting pretty sick of the straight pipe! The low end power loss is definately noticeable.

That low end power loss is easily described as "reversion flow"

The column of exhaust gasses slows and may actually flow back towards
the engine to be met by the next pulse of exhaust gasses

So the exhaust gas pulses in the pipe wind up playing "bumper cars"
and simply don't flow too well.

Catalytic converters act as fairly efficient anti-reversion baffles

Like I've said before, remiving your cat won't gain you anything and
will often lose bottom end torque.

even with a cat the flowmaster on my truck resonates a little too much for me on the highway

well i have a94 b3000 with a 3L and i cut my exhaust off right after the cat and i put a 2 1/4 to 2 3/4 adapter to fit my magnaflow muffler and then i just have a 3" turndown tip on it and it sounds real nice i personally like magnaflows and i think one would sound real good on your 4L

The Manaflows sound better on a 3.0l than on a 4.0l I think a buddy of mine had a 01 ranger with a 3.0l and Magnaflows on it and it sounded awesome so when he got rid of the truck last year I bout the muffler off of him and put it on my Ranger and not nearly as good so i bought another Flowmaster and gave the Magnaflow to a guy I work with and he put it on His 4.0l and the thing sounded like crap really or at least I thought.

The Gibsons sound pretty good. Put your cat back on.

ive got a 4.0 with duals. you don't want it that loud so get a 24" thrush or something. the longer the quieter. or you could put 18s or 24s on each pipe. that would make quiet and it should sound nice. especially 18s. to tell you the truth tho, magnaflow and flowmaster sound so similar it doesn't really matter. the engine decides how its going to sound.
