Have a 98 ranger and had a salvaged engine put in.
Runs ok but have a cam sensor code pop up with engine light.
According to my vin # old engine was a OHV. Could the problem be if they put in a SOHC engine and how do you tell if the salvaged engine that was installed is a SOHC or a OHV engine? Will this confuse my computer ?
I took to Ford dealer and they claim the cam sensor is bad. Sensor is from old engine and never had this cam code.

Well if they put the OHV cam sensor in it then its not a SOHC.

Pics of the engine, mainly the valve covers and oil pan would help us positively ID the engine, but I really doubt they put the wrong version in without knowing it. It wouldn't exactly be plug and play to the old harness.

There are a few ways that reusing a good cam sensor can cause the code. It it's put in out of time that will set codes. It's possible that it was damage during transfer. It's also possible that is was about to go bad and just couldn't handle the stress of being disturbed. There is a little magnet in the sensor, and it's common for them to come unglued after so many years. I would start by popping the sensor off the syncro and looking at the magnet, see if it is attached firmly.

Hall effect sensors (the type used for the cam pickup) are fairly rugged and simple. But they are extremely finicky, it's possible it wasn't installed correctly also.

How do you time this engine? It doesn't have the distributor cap,
instead it has coil pack.
Thx

Did you use the cam sensor timing tool to reinstall the sensor?

It must be timed correctly.
