Someone suggested to me that since I had my 4.0L engine out of 92 Ranger, I should replace it with a 302. I'm concerned about emissions, computer wiring, fuel injection, transmission, etc. Is this hard to do? Any pro and con advice?

Ok, since no comments on the 302 exchange, I have found a 97 Eexplorer with a 4.0 L in it. I think ideally that I should use up to a 94 Ranger or Explorer and that the wiring harness is the same. The question now is can I put the 97 engine in my 92 Ranger if I swap parts from mine to it? It's still a vin "x" which I think is still an OHV, so isn't a 4.0 L still a 4.0 L? I saw something about this in another post in the 50 or so pages I looked at recently.

Really depends on how much time and money you have to spare. Putting in another 4.0 is obviously the easiest and cheapest option. With a 5.0, you'll have to think about what transmission you want to use (automatic is easier), new exhaust, radiator, will you do a body lift to help with clearances, etc. You'll need to get new motor mounts. And a lot of things, and the expenses add up. I think most people end up spending well over $1000 on a 5.0 swap, some up to $3000, I think. Check out the V8 conversion forum for more info. I think there are some stickies that explain the basics. Actually the tech library has some good basic info on it also.

I just replaced my 4.0 (I have a 1994). Our trucks are OBDI, where as the 97 explorer is OBDII (anything 95 and newer I think). So for that you'd need the wiring harness and computer. I used a 4.0 out of a 92 and used my old harness and computer. Easy. And it had to be, since it's my daily driver. You can do it, but the easiest for you would be something from a 94 or earlier. But yeah, if I had the time and money and a little more knowledge I would go for the V8 swap in a heartbeat.

Thanks for replying. I didn't think about looking at other forums but, considering what you said and what I've read, I think that just repairing my engine will be the easiest and cheapest. It needs a crankshaft, oil pump and gaskets. It only has 104k miles on it. Used engines I've found from 94 back have from 160k to 240k and I can't afford a rebuilt one right now (2000+). Thanks again.

Actually a rebuilt one will not cost anywhere near that if you can do some of the work yourself. If you get on ebay and copy and paste the auction below a company in phoenix called engines direct sells 4.0 shortblocks for 91 to 97 for the same price of $499 plus $149 shipping to your door and you can buy rebuilt heads for $239 or new for $325 also on ebay.Add in gaskets and seals etc and you are still under $1000 or maybe a little more depending on what you go with.Still very reasonable. The below auction is for the 95/96 setup but they do all of them.
