The 4.0 in my 1996 Ranger (4x4 SC 5-speed) needs replaced. I'm currently looking locally for a 4.0 to swap into it. From the Tech Library I understand I need to find a 1995-97 4.0 from a Ranger or explorer or a 1997 Aerostar. Is there any other years that will fit and allow me to use my stock computer, wiring, sensors, etc?

I now see if I use a 1997 I need an 8 bolt flywheel.

Not all 1997's have the eight bolt flywheel.

But that's really the only issue with using a later engine
that you need the later flywheel to go with it.

With your computer any 1995-up engine is adaptable.

Thank you AD. Hopefully I can find a 4.0 with the right crank flange.

If you find a good 4.0 with an 8 bolt that needs a flywheel - just give me a quick message - have a couple of new flywheels here and will let you have one just for the shipping cost.

Awesome! Thanks for the offer. When I get a 4.0 found I might be taking you up on it. I'm scouring craigslist right now.

I found a good running 4.0 out of a 1998 Explorer. If it is an OHV (confirming it today) it will bolt in using my intake, exhaust, and emissions, correct? Will I have any issues with the cam position sensor? It is an auto vehicle so a new flywheel (8 bolt) will be required.
Thank you.

A '98 Explorer will have a OHV and require the 8 bolt flywheel.

I am trying to find out the years of the motors that will interchange with mine as well. I have found one from a '99 that I know will work but I have also found one from a '97 for half the price. I think from what I have read that the 97 and up OHV motors are the ones that are more prone to having head problems, not real sure but if some one could verify that I would be gratefull. Also am I reading it right that anything 95 and up OHV motors the computer and harness are the same?
