4.0 intake question

Did the early 4.0 intake have leakage problems like the later one? I picked up a 98 4.0 with the 8 bolt crank for a few small bones. Been sitting 3 years. Pulled the plugs and #4, and 5 looked to be burning the green stuff, so I'll be tearing into it before it goes into my 90' Bronco II. I'm wondering if I should look into getting a early 4.0 intake or modifying the one off the 2.9 to fit. Or am I being to worrisome about nothing? I'm not ruling out the heads, but from what I've read here, it would seem that it's most likely the intake.......

Thanks

David

Will someone please give me some sort of answer! I'm not sure why I'm not even getting a reply. Did I say something wrong?

Hi, David -

I don't have a specific answer for you, but didn't want you to be totally ignored!

I have no direct experience with later vs earlier 4.0 intakes, but, as an old time hot rodder, intake leaks are generally due to sloppy assembly/installation techniques. Cleaning mating surfaces and paying close attention to gasket/ sealant application solves most leakage problems that I have encountered. Hope some of the 'in-the-know' heads on this site will chime in with more direct knowledge. Good luck!

i had the same.easy fix

Hello, I have a 94 B4000 ex cab 5 speed 4x4. About 3 years ago I was leaking coolant and it turned out to be the intake. My Brother in law used to work for Ford and he said that was a common thing for 4.0 engines. It is not hard to do though.

If it's put together correctly then the gasket should last for a long time. I will say this.. Don't put anything but the old fashion green coolant in her or it will eat the sealer you use around the water jackets.... Use the intake that goes with it and you should be fine..
Also make sure to torque it correctly...
