4.0 guzzler? afraid to ask

I have a 1999 Ford RAnger XLT offroad 4x4 supercab with 4.0 What are others getting for miles per gallon with this rig? I'm getting around 16mpg driving like a grampa on back roads 55mph. IF anyone has found a way to do better tell me please or I'm putting this thing on blocks!

You can ensure your tires are properly inflated, the plugs are in good shape, clean air filter, etc......but that mileage is not that far off from expected. If it's unacceptable, you should have checked before you bought it.

i get about 18 all around, mine is a 90 4.0 super cab 4x4 automatic mostly hwy miles though

If you want more mileage, get a better air filter, upgrade your ignition components (Plugs, wires, coil ((definately coil))), and open up your exhaust a bit. Granted you may only get an extra 2-3 MPG for all that work but *shrug* if you were going to do it anyway. Also, consider regular oil changes, O2 sensors, EGR valve , and fuel filter. Dont forget those wierd Tornado inserts for your intake, they seem like a sham but they worked for me, didn't get the 5MPG it promised but it game me about 3 extra MPG. Every one of those upgrades will help, can't say for sure how much, the real question is is it worth buying all that stuff?

Unless of course you used 90's number of 18mpg and added it to Onions post. Not very scientific there. j/k


I am still not convinced those Tornado things do anything but add a restriction to your intake. If I get my Contour fixed I still have all the mileage records in Excel so I may just try a few things. One at a time mind you with a 'cool down' period to come back to a standard mpg for the car. That is if I ever get the time.

I expected someone to give me some of that "it's a truck, deal with it" crap. Who knew gas was gonna push $4 so soon? Tires; 40psi, spark plugs; look new, EGR;not sure, oil; synthetic, air cleaner; new Air Hog . I don't know about those "snake oil" remedies. Anyone wants a nice truck with no visible rust looking almost new in perfect operating condition with color keyed fiberglass topper first $5k takes... unless there's a pill I can put in the gas tank to get 50 mpg??? just dreaming. No seriously I was just curious what everyone with similar trucks was getting. Thanks for input.

FWIW, I got 20.1mpg and 20.3mpg on my last two tanks of fuel

I consistantly get over 400miles on each tankful.

This is with a '93 4.0 engine 5sp trans, 4.10 gears in a 4x4 '87 ranger
(with '97 axles and brakes) the only thing "special" about my truck
other than the fact that I'm running relatively small (235/75-15) tires
is that I have Borla headers on it.

My best mileage to date with the 4.0? 21.2mpg.

i got a 92 ranger 4.0 with a 5 speed
I have a new custom cold air, plugs, wires, coil and i ripped the exhaust right off after the cats and i get about 16mpg. But i had to convert mine to L/100km because im canadian right? jokes

With mixed driving (70% city) I get in the 18mpg range. It's a 97 Ext. Cab 4x4 STX with a 4.0 5spd

in my 99 extra-cab running on 32's, Im getting between 13-16.5mpg all depending on how an where im driving
