I am only getting 14.0 to 14.8 mpg out of my 2005 ranger with a 4.0 and 410 gears automatic. I have buddies with the same kind of truck getting almost 18mpg. Any ideas what is wrong. Thanks!

That's really low. I get 20 highway with 32s ans 3.73s and I have a small gas leak. I would suggest checking/changing your filters, plugs and wires. Seems early but you might need a tune up

search...... there's numerous threads on how to improve your gas mileage..

tune up, everything, filters, plugs, wires, all of it.
check o2 sensors and other sensors... tire pressure. clean your throttle body. clean your MAF.

what size tires you have? what about your buddies? do they have 4.10's also?

Well if you have a SOHC 4.0, they generally seem thirstier than the OHV 4.0's. Also, it might depend on what lubricants you're using. In my vehicles I've seen a 1-2mpg difference just using synthetics. The biggest factor is driving style.

Milage???

Milage depends on driving places, times and habits.. Also remember guys like to LIE about their milage..
You don't say where you are.. that makes a difference. You don't say how long your trips are, that makes a difference. You don't say how long it takes to burn a tank of fuel, that makes a difference...
If your engine is running smoothly NOTHING new will help milage. The factory plugs and wires will last upward of 100,000 miles.. So if not yet there don't even think about changing them.
If you are worried then fill the tank and get on the freeway at about 60 mph and drive a tank out of her.. That should getcha bout 20 mpg or so..

Yeah I would be willing to bet its all about driving habits... I can pull of 20 city and 25hwy with my 3.0L 4x4 and 3.73's on 31's I don't accelerate hard, I keep it under 60 on the highway, don't make any unessisary stops or sudden acceleration....don't pass people dont ride on peoples butts, hold my foot on the pedal with minimal change.

Basically drive like a grandma going to church and you should see much better mileage. I have seen fluxuations in gas mileage as much as 10mpg with just the way someone drives.

Drive like a grandma, and you'll get your 18mpg.

gas mileage

Truck has 80,000 on it. Most my driving is back and forth to work. 12 miles each way. Live in Southwestern PA. Guys at work not sure what their rear end ratio is. One guy does do more highway driving than me. Think they are honest about mpg. Put a can of seafoam in it and that did'nt help any. Don't think my driving habits are bad. I'm 50 years old, don't drive like a grandma but I don't hotrod it either. Was thinking of a tune up but wanted to see what you all thought. Thanks for the help! First Ford truck I've owned! I really like it. Like the way it drives. And I was a die hard GM man! Ha, ha! Of course I am restoring a 1953 Chevy 5 window pickup.

I'm getting 14 with a 4.0 ohv 2wd with a 3:08 rearend... Its been tuned up and then some... I'd love to know what I am missing... Oh and there are no codes present.

Yep!

Twelve mile trips are about as low milage as a vehicle can get..
Your milage is what i'd expect.

Hmm... Now I don't feel so bad with my mileage. This past weekend I did a reading and got a whopping 14.9 mpg hiway on a 200 mi trip. I know part of my issue is gearing... but I'm still waiting for them new ones to come in. Running 35's with 3.73's suck wind!

driving like a bat out of hell, i've seen around 13.2-14.5 mpg, driving like a granny with a mileage tune i get about 14.8-15.1, and highway i get about 18 on 4 hour trips. I've got stock 3.55 gears and measly 29" tires

i have a 2000 ford ranger 4x4 4.0 v 6 automatic and im only getting 10-12 mpg i have 33s an stock gearing but i had a 96 ranger 4.0 v 6 but 5 speed with the 33s an stock gearign i was getting anywere from 17-20mpg whats wrong with my new truck shes only got 100k miles
