I just bought a 4.0 swapped 89 B2. It came with an fm146 that was howling, so I swapped it in my driveway with a good fm146, and now it drives great..

Can this tranny hold up to a 4.0? Or am I just going to need to swap in an m50?

Well, that tranny was piss poor behind the 2.9L. It's not gonna hold up long to the 4.0L. This is one of the drawbacks to the 2.9 and 4.0 having the same bolt pattern. People will swap the motors without worrying about the trannies. It's not gonna fail tomorrow (I hope), but you will have a shortened tranny life. I would start looking for a M5OD, along with all the parts bewteen the engine and transfer case.

Is it possible to put a M5OD behind the 2.9 and use the 1350 T-case? I'm kinda new to Rangers and my 2.9 seems to run pretty good and I want to go to a 4.0 when it finally goes. I'm also in the process of getting a D-35 and an 8.8 for it. Its not a hard core rig but I dont baby it either, and it will need to tow.

Sorry about the thread theft.

The M5OD is a semi-popular swap to replace the FM146. I am currently trying to accumulate parts right now. (Or a donor truck). It's not that the Mitsu isn't a good tranny, it's just that it sucks...

What other parts are needed to do the change over, other than the flex plate and converter.

manual transmissions dont have flex plates or torque converters.... what trans does your truck have now?

Sorry my mistake, I have a A4LD and thought that he was swapping to a later model auto. These tranny #'s are confusing sometimes and as I've said, Im kinda new to Rangers.

Nope....Most common sweap is auto to manual it seems, although the old FM and TK's are generally replaced with a Mazda M5od.

All of the autos suck, even the new ones. And a swap to the newer ones isn't easy, because they are computer controlled.
