my 93 explorer just quit on me today...i tried starting it and it struggled then would start, it didnt have no power to turn the motor over, it just clicked. So i swaped a batter in and went to put the terminals back on and the alternator sparked. Would that mean its bad? or wat? any suggestions would be helpful thanks

sounds like you had something turned on so when you connected the batt it drew power instantly causing a spark. then again i could be wrong since i wasn't their :icon_twisted:

ok so double checked that battery, its good and we tried hooking it up again and the alternator kept smoking and i have no power at all...the terminals were in the right places too. Seems like i got a short? but would it just be in the wiring to the alternator? could a fualty alternator cause all of this?

So you hooked the new battery up and the alternator started smoking instantly? Wow that's weird. Can you see the source of the smoke? It's possible that your alternator has gone bad. Pull it out and get it tested to see if that's the case.

ya ill do that tomorrow, but when we put that old battery in to c if had any power and didnt at all, not even the dome light turned on, no pwer either when i turned the key

yes because the car would drain the battery and if the alternator is bad it wont charge the system

ok so yesterday a disconnected the alternator and i now have power, so guess a new alternator will fix part of the problem. Now i just gota figure out y it wouldnt start in the first place...its clicking so i was going to replace the starter relay then if that dont help i was going to change the solenoid on the starter or the whole starter if the solenoid cant be changed itself. Let me know if yins got more ideas thanks

ground straps? if u dont got a good connection itll just go click click click

the starter relay didnt do anything so guess ill check the straps and other grounds next, but i was looking toward the starter its self

The alternator is shorted. Probably diodes. If it was not charging, the battery is probably dead. Smoke means a dead short, and the battery will drain quickly.

Make sure the battery is fully charged, cable and connections are squeaky clean and tight.:)shady

ya im going to check the battery again, and i did clean connections to since i through new terminals on...well i give it another shot
