Does anyone know if the 2.9L and the 4.0L ohv use the same connecting rod bolts? I want to get ARP bolts for my rebuild and can only find them for the 2.9L.
Thanks
Nick

Give the guys at Super Six Motor Sports a call. I'll bet they know. 478-256-7766.

haha funny just asked it a couple of weeks but not a 100% sure answer.

I ordered the ARP and found out when loosening the 4.0
these conrod bolts are the same compared to an old 2.8 V6
Same numbers also in the head of the bolts

Put ARP in 2.8 en 2.9 is the same; says ARP also
and testing tomorrow hopefully.

Please let me know if you know if for sure

I know this thread is 15 years old but I’ve run into the same problem today. 1999 4.0 OHV Ranger. Had a bolt stretch on me when torquing to 24 ft lbs. ARP makes them for the 2.8/2.9 (153-6001). Found some from freedom Motorsports for the 4.0 SOHC. They look identical but have splines (KX1-920). My OEM part number on the head says KX-920 and they have (no splines). I’m assuming the splines are there for the TTY application on the SOHC. I’ve read on other forums that the ARP(154-6002) for 289/302 will work but your paying for 16 vs 12 needed and they may be a little shorter in length. Does anyone have a a success story on what worked well for them? I would appreciate some help asap! Thanks, Zack

I have used the ARP connecting rod bolts on both the 2.9 and the 4.0; they do require a small alteration to fit. Can be accomplished with a hand file.

Ok, thanks for the advice. It seems like that would be the most cost effective option vs buying the 289/302. The SOHC ones from freedom Motorsports are only $25 so that price makes me think they’re probably made in China, lol. Plus they’re splined so I don’t know how that will affect the fitment on my OHV rods.

ARP turns out, more like Wild Turkey 101..."often replicated never duplicated".

Ordered the ARP bolts for the 2.9. I’ll update how it goes next week!!
