I've recently acquired a 1995 4.0 (pushrod) 4x4, and I've noticed it started burning something, smells like oil, changed the PCV valve, still smells excessively, while driving, I can not smell it. I can smell it while at a stop, through vents and outside the vehicle. Smells like it's coming from the driver side engine bay. Prior to this smell I've replaced the Camshaft Synchronizer. I understand this part messes with timing, and is responsible for the oil pump functioning, so I made sure it was installed properly. For some reason the oil pressure on the gauge cluster reads high on start up, and takes a while (5 minutes or less) to read normal. I do have an engine knock. Cooling is not an issue, as I replaced the entire cooling system less then 6 months ago. Can anyone tell me what, or where to start to fix this burning oil issue?

If you actually smell it at a stop you probably have an external leak that his getting onto the exhaust, which pretty much means valve cover gaskets.

I would be very reluctant to take anything your oil pressure needle says at face value, it's an idiot light that mostly just shows "OK" or "Less OK". Get a real gauge on it and see what the pressure is really doing.

The oil pressure reading high is normal when cold, thick oil makes more pressure.

Unless you have a factory gauge then its pry an electric issue.

If youre smelling it at a stop or whatever il lay ya 10-1 its valve cover gaskets.

But truthfully, the knock is what id be concerned with before i attacked any other issue.
