I have a 2001 4wd ranger. Having problems when kicked into passing gear it is like it was shifted to neatral and the motor just revs up till i let the rpms fall back down, any ideas what might be wrong? Thanks

Your Tranny is slipping. My 1996 explorer had the same issue. It was diagnosed at 3 different shops and all told the same story Input Transmission Turbine Speed sensor. Now the is an internal transmission part in the center support (at least in a 1996 4.0). Since I have never done transmission work I sure wasn't going to disassemble it myself so I paid for $800 labor and $40 parts. Go get it diagnosed. If it is the same issue I have there should be transmission codes. If not than you may need a rebuild.

Valve body or maybe separator plate. I had mine go to neutral a few times and a rebuilt valve body fixed it better then new. Most tranny shops just take your money. They would never mention a cheap and easy fix. I researched the hell out of mine before ordering parts. There is a ton of info on the web about slipping Explorer and Ranger trannys. I have a bunch of links on the subject if you like.

Sounds good.where Is the ID number on my transmission? So I know I am getting the right parts. I have researched this a little and it seem maybe the seperator plate may be my problem. Do I have to get this at the dealer? will the gaskets be bonded? I have read the bonded plates cure the gasket blow out problem. Thanks for your help.

Can you tell me where I can order the seperator plate with the gaskets bonded to it? I checked with the ford dealer close to me and they did not have the bonded seperator plate. If i wanted just the gaskets they said they had to order 4 of each. I dont want the gaskets if i can help it.

That's ridiculous, Try a different ford dealer. That's the only place to get the bonded plate. Nobody else sells them but Ford. I know that all my local Ford dealers stock them.

I have found a site that carries a bonded seperator plate but it says pressure control blow off hole eliminated. Are all the bonded plates like this? I think i read somewhere this was an upgrade but I am not sure if there are parts in the valve body that has to be upgraded at the same time.

Im not real sure about that but here is an article on the subject: http://www.ford-trucks.com/article/...ad_Separator_Plate_And_Valve_Body_Gasket.html

Like I said I did a ton a research on this before I made any purchase of parts. Google is your friend. I found this article in 30 seconds. I chose the simplest route by buying the whole valve body with the mods done to it. It cost me $250 and was well worth it. All I had to do was just swap them out. BTW the new valve body came with the old style separator plate but it was included in the deal.
