4.0 and the manual trans years

I need some info on exactly which years the 4.0 was packaged with the 5-speed manual transmission. The reason why I ask is because I have a 2wd 1990 ranger reg. cab and swb and I want to swap in a 4.0 for a little bit more power than the 2.3 that's already in her now. The 4.0 swap should be almost a plug in deal from the information that I gather, however I read in the forums that the ranger wasn't paired up with a manual from around 95+. Can somebody please confirm this? If this is true I'll have to think about putting something else in engine bay when the time comes.

Can't you put in a manual from 95-? Or am I missing something obvious?

Yes it would be possible and I am considering it. I would like to keep it all within the same generation of ranger as to keep the wiring and dash connections easy. Also the ranger came out with a 4.0 SOHC engine which is awesome but I would imagine wiring it up would be a headache to figure out. I'm hoping that Ford had a 4.0 and 5-speed 2wd combination for my generation of truck.

Rico, my '97 has a 4.0L and M5OD-R1 transmission. If you want an OHV configuration, you can pull up to '00. Even after that, you can retrofit a M5OD-R1 HD manual trans (after 2001) behind your OHV.

1991 was the first year that a 4.0L Ranger came with a 5spd manual & it's been available ever since.

Not that it really matters!
