ok so... bcuz of gas prices, i was wondering if i could swap a destroyed 4.0 out for a 2.3, and regear it, or will the trans from teh 4.0 bolt to the 2.3?

Trans will not bolt up, but sure you can do it if you are willing to put another trans in there.

and replace all the wireing to match the 2.3

If you don't have to worry about emissions, put a carb and a duraspark in it, and it could probably pass a sniffer test if tuned correctly.

My carbed, and durasparked 88 2.3, 22 mpg city, 26 mpg hwy.

so what about a 3.0 will that bolt up? (i highly doubt it just looking at my cheapest options)

You would still need another trans, and another wiring harness. ALL 3.0's were FI. And, to quote someone else (sorry, I don't remember who), they are a bastard engine...NOTHING swaps to anything else.

I would go the 2.x route. Oh, and good luck finding a 4wd 4 banger trans if you are 4wd.

your ranger will feel like its been neutered if you've driven it with the 4.0l all this time.if you plan on a lift kit down the road don't put a smaller engine in.though a turbo diesel 4 in a mercedes nearby was tempting to me.there are adapters to toyota trannies and t-cases.:stirthepot:

Just got off the phone with Elsinger, definatly not cheap but if your looking for power and MPG, the LIMA sounds like the solution. If you have the cash, they can build you a 2900 full roler race motor with, from there tech, whatever horsepower number you want. It sounds like the cheapest route would be to find a good used longblock (they recomend the high compression turbo motors,) and prrchase one of there assembled heads. I ran some numbers in my head and this (assuming you can turn a wrench) should be doable for $2500-$3000. That seems like alot, but remember your mileage will still be much better than what you are getting now and your power loss won't be anywhere near as significant. It is also in the ballpark of having your 4.0 rebuilt. All the factory injection, etc. bolt up to there D-port aluminum head so I think you could make emissions work, really depends on your state.

Just something to think about.
