I'm going to swap a 130 amp 3g alternator on to my 86 2.9. My question is, what all do I need besides the alt. And the bracket? Do I need the wiring pigtail with the alt. Or not?
Thanks

Yes, you will want to take the harness with it. Also, the 3G you'll be taking will have a serpentine pulley, and IIRC, yours has a V pulley on it. You also want to run a 4 AWG wire from to the battery. It will melt the piss out of your current wiring.

EDIT: Give this a gander -

Like what Shane said, you will want to grap the pigtail with a decent amount of wire on it for splicing. I helped with this write up, there is a wiring diagram on the page that makes it super simple. You will need to swap the pulleys as well. Good luck.

Nice write up Twister. I was just looking at the clocking position on those alternators. I just listed a couple of alternators on Ebay, and they seem more appropriately clocked for the 2.9 bracket. These are 3G alternators for an E150 or F150 with the 4.9 Liter straight six.

Yeah. I read both those articles
I just wanted to make sure I need the pigtail too, because I was considerimg just buying a new alternator and saving the trip to the junk yard.

Yeah a couple people have used those, you don't have to swap brackets if you use one. But I didn't have the patience to grab one from a van and there isn't a lot of I6 vans in the junkyards near me.

Is that a 130 amp alternator too shane? I thought I read the 4.9 alt.s were only 90ish iirc

I'm worried about the fan and lights. Right now my head lights dim when I turn on my heater
