so is it typical of the power-house ( :icon_rofl:) 2.9 with a a4ld and 3:73 with 235-75-15s to only be able to hit a whopping 35 mph going up a 7% grade? or are there other issues that might be going on ? the outside temp was about 90˚.

hmmm...my 2.3L with 31s and a 3.73s I can make it up a fairly steep hill doing 55 mph.

my 3.0L only did 35mph with a loaded 5x8trailer and bed filled including my quad(second gear at 3000rpm). that was with 3.73s and 225/70-15s and 5-speed and climbing to a couple thousand ft on a 6% so that does sound a bit low with being unloaded.

I'd say its typical of a 23 year old engine . Time to upgrade.

check your air & fuel filters. that'd be my first thing..

air filter is good. just replaced it about a month ago with a non-fram.
as for the fuel filter. im having a hell of a time trying to get to that damn thing.
i cant figure out what Ford was thinking when they made that placement design. :annoyed:

remove the cover plate, spin it off with a strap wrench.

then, do the one up by the engine, it's easiest to crawl under from the front bumper.

finally, i can run 70mph up a 7% with the same configuration as you in an 86 b2.

mine is located in the frame, under the drivers seat covered by a plate.
with those funky clips that connect the fuel line to the filter.
im probably making it harder than it is.

there should be one inline up by the engine, and one screw on element type on the rail, look for both.

run some gumout with regane through the gas tank, then seafoam it

also might wanna have it hook up to a computer(not the cheap code readers), u know the ones that can tell u whats wrong without a cel, could be a o2 sensor, or a coolant temp sensor or somethin stupid

I run 65 up a 6.5% daily. I have to hit it at 65 in 4th to make it to the top at anything approaching a reasonable speed.

ive done the seafoam in the gas, but not thru the vacuum yet. not sure how the neighbors would like it. this is california.
not sure i want to do gum-out.

i'm not sure how castrated the california emissions 2.9 is, but that might be the problem right there.

i used to live in oregon, and this is an oregon vehicle. im the 2nd owner. but ya, it could be something in the gas. i have been thinking of gutting the cat. since it will still be registered in oregon while im down here,
