347 stroker

My stroker kit ran me 2700.00 (just for the kit) that didn't include the boring my block needed (.040 over cause of a scratch in the #5 cylinder wall), and having it built, I run '68 heads, but I had them gone through and everything matched to My Lunati cam (another 1300.00), since I was using a '69 block (it was one of mine so I knew what it was all about), I needed another dual sump pan (which I had to modify to accept a pan dipstick). My Ranger was already set up for the 302, so it was just a matter of putting it back in, but I wanted everything right so I had the radiator rotted out (another 150.00). I'm pushing around 400hp with this engine

This was during the install a few years ago. I went with a Holley 2D Pro-Jection set up at first, but it went to hell so I have went back to a Q-Jet.
A lot of variables on what you want, I wouldn't go with "can get a hold of" parts (just my opinion). Your gonna spend some coin on internal engine parts, so make everything work right and work together. Thats the key for building any engine. Keep us informed about what you decide, and take lots of pics.....

The Explorer cam on the other hand won't work with the carb because it doesn't have a distributor gear.

Sure it does. It runs the cam synchronizer.

The 347's used more oil and were thus considered less reliable if you were still wondering 85_Ranger4x4. That's the reason why I'm going with a 331 kit (that and a 347 will twist my frame like a noodle :icon_twisted:).

Damn you're right, for some reason I forgot about that and was thinking that timing came solely from the crank trigger. They do have the CPS so they would have a gear there. So what was I thinking about reading that the Explorer cam wouldn't work with a distributor? Gear material maybe?

From my understanding this issue has been removed from most 347 kits. Now they use a shorter rod with a taller piston that will still give 347 CI. The old style kits are still available so you got to be careful when ordering.

All the more reason to just play it safe and go 331.

The HO cam doesn't care if it is being fed by a carb or EFI.

I just noticed this part. Lol.

What I meant by what I said was, I don't know which combo is good with a carb (H/C/I). I know I was so tired of messing with my Holley on my 85 GT that I got a 550cfm Edelbrock for it. It was better, but I still have zero desire to have a carb again.

If your gonna be happy with 450 rearwheel horsepower and not want anymore, then go with the stroked 302. But, you will want more and then all the money you spent on the 302 could've went to a stroked windsor or even just a 30 over windsor at the beginning of your build. I started with a mild 302 with edelbrock performer alum. heads and it wasn't enough eventually, so built a 331 with afr 185 alum heads and it was a badass engine. Then again after a while it felt slow, so needed more power and added sniper nitrous kit to it, but before I used the kit I read on how 302 blocks are a timebomb on splitting when you get near 500hp. I had too much money in the stroker to take a chance on spitting the block. So, 331 went up for sale and I went to a 351 windsor and will never ever build a 302 again. good luck
