Hey TRS! So I have a 318 in my garage that was taken out of my 67 Dodge Dart Swinger. Is it possible to cram that engine in my 84 Ranger? And wouldn't having a v8 in a v6 ranger just twist the chassis? Thanks!

Take a look in the v8 swap section, tech library, etc... people are doing them all day long, since the ranger came out into production really.

One of the more common swaps is the 302, but nothing says you can't put what you want under the hood, but a v8 swap is easier said then done, but not to difficult.

It's going too take more then that engine to twist a ranger frame.

That motor swap is just not worth it. Sure it can be done. They can be strong runners, I had the 273 Hi-Po version, didn't think the 318 or the Swinger was an option in '67'.

The 318 was put in the Dart by the owner before me. I swapped it out with a 383.

It should fit...the Dakota v6 engines are/were just a 318 with the back bank of cylinders chopped off...measure under the hood of a Dakota and then compare to your Ranger under hood space. Don't know what to tell you about trying to mate a Mopar to Ford electronics...good luck with that.

I agree just not worth it, but in my mind neither is the 302 swap.

Don't bother.
You have the 2.8L V6 and the swap to 4.0L is a common one. That'll give you plenty of juice for running up and down the mountain.
Keep in mind you live in California. By swapping a V6 that originally came in a Ranger, you can more easily get around difficulty with emissions regulations.

Now seeing that you live in California, is not as easy of a job. If I remember right, don't you have to have an engine that is the same year or newer then your vehicle to be able to do the swap so that you can drive it?

Ok thanks guys! I've decided not to do it. I was just trying to use what I have but your right it would be hard to match up all the electrics to a Ford. I never thought of that.

I'm trying to find a newer Ranger with Dana 35s on it so maybe ill just try and find one with a 4.0L.

I have never heard that law in Cali. but ill look into it!

Cali is the land of the emission nazi... You better know the laws before you do any engine swap. You could wind up with a truck that you cant use.

Well my dad is the local sheriff So its not to hard for me to find this stuff out. :D

Find someone with like a 74 Dumpster that needs a motor and sell that boat anchor. Then use the money for something nice for yer truck.

Yeah good idea! or I can just sell my 71 dodge charger that's just sitting in my backyard!
