I picked up a spare axle shaft a while back thinking both sides were the same. Now I need the opposite side and I am not sure which one I currently have. Anyone know the length of each shaft? The tech library doesn't say anything about the 31 spline shafts.

I found this:

Explorer 8.8 Measurements:
Weight (complete assembly w/ brakes etc.): 174 lb.
O.D. of tubes: 3.250".
Tube thickness: .250" (some are .188”!)
Ring gear diameter: 8.800".
Ring gear bolts: 7/16" dia. (qty. 10).
Pinion diameter/splines: 1.625 / 30.
Axle shaft/splines: 1.320 / 31.
Rotor thickness (where it mounts to axle is .250").
Overall width 59.625" (the F8.8 is .950" narrower then a TJ Dana 35).
(The F-150 8.8 is drum brake and width WMS to WMS is 65.5”.)
Hole diameter for ABS sensor in top of housing: .811".
Bolt size (U-joint flange to yoke) is: 12 x 1.75 x 30 mm
Centerline of housing to C/L of pinion difference is 3.875" toward the P/S.
Pinion offset: P/S to C/L of Pinion, 27-3/4" (no rotor on axle), D/S to C/L of Pinion, 31-5/8" (no rotor on axle). (this measurement is 2.5" more offset to the P/S then a TJ Dana 35).

Thanks. Some good info there, just not exacttly what I am looking for.

Take a 2nd look:

P/S to C/L of Pinion, 27-3/4" (no rotor on axle), D/S to C/L of Pinion, 31-5/8" (no rotor on axle)

They should be about 27 3/4" and 31 5/8". But I've also seen the long side listed as 30 5/8" and the short side listed as 27 1/2".

That's about what I found, I use RockAuto as a good source also for some sizes.

The length looks about right.

Ok thanks guys. Should be close enough to figure out which side I need.

Thats a good question guys - reviving an old thread.

I have a 31 spline FX4 level II rear end - I am looking for a set of Moser axles. But they need to know the length of axles that I need.

Would those 28 spline lengths be good for me too?

Spoke with every axle mfgr in north america and noone makes an aftermarket axle shaft for the level 2

Pull the shafts and break out the tape measure. They are the same legth shafts as the 31 spline expo axles AFAIK.

Carefull - the Explorer axle is 1 1/2" wider than the '93' and newer Ranger, check tech library.

We're talking about the 31 spline ranger 8.8.. I'm betting it's explorer width too.
