hey yall got some 30x9.50s dunlop mud rovers on my ranger. 96 4x4 5spd with the 4.0. anyway the other night ended up in a small pond/ big ditch full of water and mud. anyway got out locked the hubs in and put her in 4 hi. the truck really didnt like this to much and after a while i put it in 4 lo to get it going easier. anyway i still had to be pulled out. my question is is it normal for my truck not wanting to turn my tires in the mud with 4 hi? it had 31''s from the factory. it didnt have a problem in 4 lo but 4 hi really hard on the clutch. what do you all think?

mud is thick and heavy. turning those tires in it in high range, you didn't have enough power/torque to them. by changing to Lo-range, you effectively doubled the gear ratio, thus getting the most torque and horsepower to the gears where you need them most. trouble is, unless you have true mud tires on your truck, the tires want to spin rather easily and dig in deeper. it's a careful balance between the power you have available and just the right amount to get you going without spinning the tires. same goes for driving in deep snow. we get lots of both here in northern Minnesota. glad you were able to get it out even if it was a tow.

well it is an actual mud grip tire. typical 4 lug and is supposed to be self cleaning. anyway i was just wanting to make sure the it was "normal" for my truck to do this.
