306 Ranger, pulling timing at tip in

I have adjusted the preload three times. I have replaced the lifters, rolled the pushrods on glass, and Inspected all components. I guess the next step is replacing the valve springs unless I can identify the problem in another area. It sure sounds like a rocker slapping.


i assume you did a leak down since you actually replaced parts...

but if they are not rotating or are loaded up or rough edged but not totally burnt the flow variance can be a tuning nightmare. i assume you inspected them carefully and cycled them with a eyeball..


i would bet the normal explorer driver would not notice any of the issues you do...i am sure i would...

Yes, we did a leak down. Everything was good there. The only problem I have now is what sounds like rocker noise at 2700 rpm's and above. Could be an exhaust leak or any number of other things. Maybe a little slack in the timing chain. Remember it does have 200,000 miles on the build. Just having trouble identifying what and where the noise is coming from. No drivability issues at this time, running great!!! The datalog shows the timing dropping to 6.75 at tip in but that is a tuning issue with the custom tune. That has been occurring since the motor was built in 2015.

The plan was always to take it out to 400,000 miles. I don't mind freshening up a few things along the way. Timing chain, valve springs, lifters, etc.

I already have another block and new parts in the waiting. I was just hoping it will stay in waiting for another two or three years.

i can see 400 the way you maintain it. i drive stupid miles too, but lately its not just my personal vehicle...or that turd would be closer to two million miles.
 
Sorry, I have had trouble with the profile page for awhile now. No, I never did figure it out. It seems to come in the hot months each year. It is gone now that the temp has changed in the cooler months. Just to be clear, the problem with timing at tip in is still present but no drivability issues continue. The drivability issue was a stumbling at tip and that is gone. It is possible that the two are connected but only causes a issue when ambient temps and humidity are up.

I am still working with my son on a new custom tune to work around the timing dropping at tip in. We purchased the SCT Software to edit the existing tune or create a new custom tune all together. While gearing up for that the truck has developed a new issue. Rocker noise above 2700 rpm's. I have adjusted the preload three times. On the rocker slap..oil pressure good?
 
No, Variable Valve Timing is used on some Over Head Cam engines, the 306 is OHV, a pushrod engine, it is an over bored 302(5.0l) OHV
Not sure any one has done VVT on any OHV engine?
I know the 302 is OHV. I read somewhere these explorer computers pull timing with the VVT,

Oil pressure good, operates perfect except for the noise. My son put new lifters in a few weeks ago and he is doing new Trick Flow Springs this weekend. Will see how that works.
