302 water pump

Hi i have a 1985 ranger. My donor 302 and radiator came out of a 78 mercury monarch. Damaged the radiator from not enough clearance from the water pump. So anyone know of a shorter water pump i can use. I am going to use a radiator from a 4.0 94 explorer. Ty.

5.0 Explorer or SN95 5.0 Mustang. SN95 will allow you to retain the stock dampener (I think)

Explorer has the bottom pulley as part of the dampener which is obviously the later 50oz setup and thus a snag for a pre 1980 engine.

I had the long pump in mine with the Explorer radiator mounted on the stock mounts and a pusher EFan, it worked ok. Pushing the radiator up inside the core support will gain you room too, many go that route.

I have a writeup in the submit tech info on the Explorer install if you can find a rebalanced dampener. Some stuff might carry over to the Mustang setup too.

I know you do for the Ex, I am pretty sure you do for the SN95 also. Its been a few years but IIRC they use the same cover. Different rotation than a standard V belt setup.

A serpentine set up from a 5.0 explorer is becoming a popular swap into early bronco's for radiator clearance.

A Early Bronco 66-77 V-8 or a small block Ford V-8 up to 1969 water pump is also shorter than
a 70 + small block but the shorter pump lower hose is on the passenger side.

I have a 351w in my 75 bronco and running 3 V-belts at the moment.
2 for the alt and PS , I have a 3rd. that run's a york pump for on board air.
I remove the 3rd. belt for daily driving.

You may get 5/8" if you use Early bronco water pump , pulley's and brackets.
A 1969 mustang has the same water pump as a Early Bronco , I am not sure about the pulley's being the same.

I did find measurements once , maybe at Edelbrock Water pump page , not sure, there is only like a 1/4" in length difference but the main reason it's shorter is in the pulley configuration and not the length of the water pump.

Another note ,
Ford serpentine belt water pump's are considered reverse rotation.
All other V-belt water pump's are standard rotation.

I am going to put a larger radiator in my 75 bronco and worried about clearance , I have a inch at the moment and my fan is a 1/8" from my 3rd. belt at idle.

You must have the dampener rebalanced to work on pre 1980 engines however.

Ford did make std rotation micro V belted water pumps, technically not serp but the belt is the same type.

finally got to work on the ranger. going to attempt original balancer. but not worried about that yet. having a hard time with the water pump bolts and studded bolts.

I got the short water pump and timing case cover kit. m-8501-a50. Now the original bolts for the water pump are either too short or too long. Are there any bolt kits for this kit?

I just used normal grade 5 hardware.
