Ok guys I could use some help. I have a 87 4x4 Ranger with a 302 engine and the stock 5-speed tranny. The tranny is messed up and I really don't wanna stick another ranger one in, instead I'd like to swap to a 5-speed F-150 transmission. What years will work and are there any clearance issues?

'77 ???? Apparently the '97 up 4.2l 5-speed tranny fits best as far as shifter position and will bolt up to the 302.

Ok, a 77 did not have a 5 spd stock. What trans do you have (m5odr2 or ZF 5 spd)? And what Tcase do you have?

I have a 88 ranger stx with a 2.9L v6 and a 5-speed. I bought my 87 ranger that already had the 302 in it and I assumed it was a factory ranger 5-speed. I guess I need to look and see...

Rangers started in 1983(midsized trucks) rangers with the 2.9 started in 1986... Unless someone transplanted that engine, you might have your years mixed up :icon_thumby:

87 and an 88***. I can't type tonight sorry guys

That's ok, just wanted to keep the info clear... :D BTW, The stock ranger trans is the M5ODR1, and will not bolt to the 302, the M5ODR2 is the stock 5 spd in the f150, and is found behind the 4.2 v6, which shares the same bolt pattern as the 302. It's likely you have the r2. If you have a pto cover on the bottom of your trans near the front, then you have the ZF 5 spd...

I think i have the R1 with the aftermarket adapter plate...

Do you have a plate at least 0.250" thick between the motor and trans(metal or aluminum)? If you do, then i would agree with you...I'd definitely get an R2...

I don't know what transmission I should put in my 89 ford ranger

I own a 1989 ford ranger and put a 302 motor in it but don't know what transmission I can or should put in it. I went to the junk yard and found a 96 model ford f150 6 cylinder 5 speed and didn't know if that would work in my truck or not... please help.

If it was the I-6, 302 or 351, it'll bolt up and fit...
