Im putting a 302 carb in my 1990 ford ranger and im building the motor from the block up for the first time. I was needing any advice that would make this swapgo easily for starters i want to keep it manual trans what trans would be easy to install and still perform any advice would help thanks

Best advice is read the stickies above, read the tech library and also use the search feature.

It's a common thing asked by alot of people wanting to do this kind of swap.

But I will say this. What are your plans for your truck as in is it going to be your DD, a strict trail rig, or both?

You are doing what I did. Went carbed and went manual (for me my truck has always been manual).

Take a look at my thread. A few other people will chime in that have done v8 swaps to help you out too.

half and half i have a company van that i drive back and forth to work but when im home im gonna drive it every where else its 2wd and im completely new to engine rebuilding i just want it to be reliable but yet perform and sound good

What year is the engine, not all are created equal? What's your budget, if any? What hp numbers are you looking for?

Your exhaust choice will determine what she sounds like.

Me I'm at 200hp. 91 grand marque engine with a stock mustang cam put in it that bumped it from 155hp to 200hp. The rest of her is stock other then it being converted to carb.

its a 1970 302 longblock it came out of a 71 f100. budget aint important im not loaded by no means but right now its about 1000 to get it on the road but more if needed

im planning a complete rebuild new pistons crank etc

full gasket set

e303 cam

and true dual exhaust

8.8 posi rear end

im searching craigslist and junk yards for every thing i can but theres only so much you can get out of there

Is it ok to use that cam in a stock motor or do i need to upgrade some other stuff its all gonna be brand new but basically stock?

What all can i use off my 2.9 efi ?

and i having a hard time coming back to my thread whats the eaisest way to get back to your own thread

I know one guy that has used a 1970 block in his ranger. So happens too be Jim Oaks, the founder of this site. But as far as if you can use that cam, not sure. But the easiest way is to look at how much lift it has and have much lift the valve train can take such as your valve springs.

But I'm also not sure if the E cam comes in both flat tappet and roller, only know of it being in roller but nothing says a cam of the same specs can't be ground for you by a company. Also being a flat tappet, since you are gluing to be switching out the cam, you will need new lifters too. A good cam and lifters could cost you about half of your budget so be careful. And no you can't put a roller cam into a flat tappet and I wanna say vise versa too.

I don't know how much hp your engine was rated at from the factory or much more about it but being a 302, bolt on hp is an easy thing to do.

If you haven't read the tech library on what it takes to at least put a 302 under the hood, I would do that. Your going to need a dual sump oil pan.

Costed me a grand to do my swap but I didn't do a full gasket go through on mine, just did the oil pan, valve covers, etc... All depends on how good you are at finding deals.

And to find your thread easier, subscribe to it, is under one of the option bars and to find it, go under user cp. Wish I was on my computer, would make it a bit more easier to explain.

You can run an " E " cam in a 70 block, but it is going to be expensive. The E cam is a roller cam, and the 1970 block is not a roller block. You can get by this by running link bar lifters, but those alone will cost you in the $500 range!

thanks for all the advice im gonna be puttin some pics up here of the whole process and you said i need a flat tappet cam right. cause 500 is way to much just for some lifters im gonna look for some different cams

Yes, flat tappet for all blocks before 1985. The started phasing in after that with roller cams. Be sure to match your cam with the rest of the engine. A badass cam with stock heads and manifolds will be a big disappointment for you.

Found some specs on your engine to help you out. 210BHP and from what another sight said when you have the water pump, power steering pump, etc... hooked up your at 122hp. A simple way to take a load of the engine is to use a efan.

I will say you are starting out with a good engine. If you want a bit more our of her then go with a 4barrel carb, 500cfm is good one to go with. Had a 600cfm on mine and it was just too much. I'm also running a dual plane intake.

But from your list, sounds like you are on track.
