302 shakes and cuts out?

Convert that electric pump to mechanical. Fuel supply issues solved.

Why you didn't do it when you were building the motor has only one explanation, funding.

Mechanical fuel pumps can be had to support 700+HP. You're no where near the limits, and you won't be for a long time. A generic parts store pump will more than keep up with what you have.

Thats great...but how do I put a mechanical fuel pump on?

5/16 fuel line is good for about 400 HP with a good pump.

Do the math.

Ok...I have 3/8" fuel line. No math needed.

There are swap specific mechanical pumps that are upside down to clear the PS box I'm having. Rough runni g issues to just randomly started I think I got a bad float or a carb full of shit....I'll reasearch it too and get back on here man got me curious cause im gonna be running the exploder fead too

Explorer 302 timing covers don't have a spot for a mechanical fuel pump. If only it was as easy as buying one and putting it on.

That is why I have an electric fuel pump.

Well that's a good enough reason to not have a mechanical pump lol

I tested fuel pressure and its at 4 psi at idle and driving around it can go as low as 2-3 psi at WOT. Is fuel pressure supposed to be steady? I'm assuming I need a better pump?

Hhhhmmm I would agree try adding a 6v battery off of something ya got layin around to up its power to 18v get it spinning faster and see if it'll put out more then start the truck if prob quits then just get a better pump

Note. I probably wouldn't keep it on the 18v for long just enough for a test

From my research my current fuel pressure is optimal for a q-jet. With my q-jet on my brothers Chevy 350 it could reach 5k rpm no problem on even less fuel pressure than mine . I guess my next step is to check timing. Maybe the distributor isn't advancing? I need to make a timing pointer and marks on the harmonic balancer so I can adjust it if needed.

Mechanical fuel pump timing covers can be had cheap used, or brand new for, the last time I looked, around $80.00.

71-73 Ford van 302 pumps are upside down and will clear the steering gear. $39.99 brand new from AZ, probably can be had less online elsewhere.

Make sure it looks like that one!

And if you switch, don't forget the fuel pump eccentric.http://www.ebay.com/itm/Small-Block...ash=item4ae99ae367:g:wfwAAOSwv0tVSQf2&vxp=mtr

Invaluable Ranger 5.0 swap links! They work.

I think he chose the exploder set up to gain room in his engine bay which is what I need to do

Peganit2, did you even bother to read my reply from your earlier post?

The link you sent me won't work on my setup. That is for a standard rotation waterpump and I have a serpentine belt setup that requires a reverse rotation waterpump.

Yeah for a van and still all sorts of ugly with my steering box.

That is pretty dismal. IIRC my Edelbrock wants to see no more than 11psi, which you are a very long ways from.

Like step 5 of swapping to the Explorer FEAD is to remove that eccentric because it won't fit.

People don't swap to the Explorer setup because it mandates an electric fuel pump, they do it for a smarter accessory setup.

The Explorer setup is far easier to service in a tight engine bay... because it was designed for one. Get a good electric fuel pump on the frame rail and you are done. :icon_thumby:

And as I said earlier I have no more room for an upside down pump than I do a rightside up one. :c-n:

I didn't realize expo feads didn't have one my bad I caught it when he said it the first time

I was just saying when I had an '87 CV FEAD there is no way the van pump would have fit. No two swaps are the same though, for someone else it is plausible the chips fell in a way that it would work. Just not for me.
