300hp + a Manual, that's my goal for my swap. What would be the best way to go? 5.0 HO makes around 300 doesn't it? Or would a 351 be better? I was told engines from teh F series trucks have big intakes that wouldn't fit under the Ranger hood. Is it the same with the E-series vans? I was offered a 351 from an Econoline van, and I am not sure how well it would fit.
Also, what would be the best option for a tranny? Will a T-5 hold up? The T-45s seem a bit more rare. And has anyone put a M5OD from a Bronco/F-series in?

Thanks

actually, the hp for the 5.0 varied from 190-240 hp in stock form depending on the year and application.

truck motors were not big power makers... they leaned more toward torque for truck use.

the t-5 should hold up, if not... a tremec 3550 or TKO will do the job. stay away from the M5OD.

The H.O. V8s were rated at 225hp. The cobra was more. The M5OD in the fullsize trucks is a M5OD-R2 where as the ranger based trans is an M5OD-R1. Although the R2 is heavier duty, 300hp might push its limits. A T-5 should hold up to moderate abuse behind a mild V8.

the H.O.'s didnt ALL have 225... some were less, depending on year.

The 94-97 E & F series truck 5.0's were about 10 hp short of the HO motor. The M5OD-R2 will hold up fine.

Ok, well if a T-5 will hold up fine, I will just use that, they are fairly easy to find on craigslist for me.
A stock HO is around 225? I thought they were a bit more then that... I guess I may need to add a couple bolt-ons over time get the numbers up a bit. I want to have a pretty good increase over my 4.0, which is around 165 if I am not mistaken.

I think you'll have to get at least a 1" body lift kit for the 351. Thats what I heard though.

the hp on mass air 5.0's was 225, the torque for the mass air's were 300. then they dropped to 215 i believe, the speed density f series trucks has 185 hp, anyhow regardless i just wanted to throw out there that these t5's can take a severe beating, ive ran one in completely stock form in a 14.02 second car that never got traction till the top of third gear. if i could of got traction it should of been a easy low-mid 13 second car. dont get me wrong im sure it would have eventually gave way but what im getting at is they are great trannys even in stock form. check out this site, it will give a breakdown of what years had the best torque ratings, the 1352 number is located on the id tag on the left side of the housing, the 4 cylinder trannys had steeper gears but their torque ratings were drasticly lower

just make sure you get a "world class" as the non "world class" trannys have drastic differences internally from what ive read and will not hold up to abuse. also if you have the money look into g-force transmissions, they have t5 kits that are borderline indestructable and they or you can build it from a "world class" t5 core. keep in mind a stock cobra spec t5 will sell for 750-1000 bucks, a t-56 will sell for more then that, so whats the point in spending that kinda cash on a stock tranny when u are close to the cost of an almost indestructable gforce gear set

a v8 t5 out of a fox will typically sell for around 400

a 4 cylinder t5 out of a fox will typically sell for 150-200

if the gforce gearset is what you are after then its alot smarter to get the 4 cylinder tranny and just upgrade it since you can get the tranny for cheap

the tko's have a 26 spline input shaft so youll have to run a 26 spline clutch vs the stock t5's 10 spline, im not positive but i think spline count is an option with gforce but it is not for the tko, i could be wrong though as its been awhile since ive looked into them.

if 300 hp is your goal you can prolly get there pretty cheap with a "e" or "f" cam, world product heads, a decent intake, throttle body, mass air meter, etc.

Ok, cool. I'll start out with a basic HO T-5 combo. Mass air, and keep it stock to start. Then over time, build it up. I didn't know the torque numbers were so high compared to the hp numbers. That will be fun for lighting up the back tires... I have a feeling my AT tires won't last long with that combo, lol, may be worth it to buy a second set of tires for summer time.

Don't get all up on the HP numbers first of all, most of them had the same internals but the HP reading were at different RPM's. Holly did a test of a bone stock 5.0 to set the base line readings of their tests and they got 250 at the crank. MM & FF did a bunch of real world dyno test quite a few years ago with different combonations. Using the Cobra/Explorer style intake and slightly reworked E7 heads they got 325 hp but about 360 ft-lbs torque, torque is the killer for the power train parts.

Mainly, I want to feel a good increase in power. The 4.0 is great, but something that can at least push me to beat my friends '94 Mustang GT with a HO 5.0 would be what I want at least.

you WILL notice a good increase in power, the torque will do that. the reason torque is so good in efi 5.0's is the efi allows a constantly adjusting A/F ratio so it is as close to perfect as possible (provided all sensors are working properly).

and the reason i would rather have a t-5 over a truck trans... from what i am hearing, you are planning on having fun with this truck and ive not had much luck powershifting a M5OD, BUT the mustangs ive had have seen "no lift shifts" on a regular basis and the little t-5 gave me it's middle finger! :icon_rofl:

i have broke a couple, which is when i got a TKO (which NEVER broke).

Well, considering I have never driven a manual, there will be a bit of a learning curve before I am powershifting, haha.
