300+hp?

Yep, your new intake probably has a cone filter attached to a round pipe? This air filter probably has little or no shroud to block out engine compartment heat so now you're pulling in warm air instead of cool air. The only aftermarket intake I would recommend is the Volant as this has a full engine compartment shroud.

I had a 3.0L Ranger that I installed JBA headers, BBK 56mm throttle body, ported/polished intake, Volant intake, 1.7:1 crane roller rockers, underdrive pullies, electric fan, hotter coil, and advanced the ignition 4 degrees. It was a single cab and had 3.73:1 gears. One of my friends had a same year OHV 4.0L with 3.55:1 gears and a muffler change and it would still walk my truck. So, that tells me the 3.0L was still at or under 160 hp. Because of this parts list (and the body of the truck had a lot of work) I was able to make a good buck when I sold it.

And if you're still reading about my experience. I swapped in a 93 cobra mustang 5.0L with a carb. That was fun. Then I pulled it for what I'm building now (400hp mechanical cam'd 306") And my future plan is to build a 408w stroker. You see the pattern?

Most all of the parts to build more power out of the 3.0L are going to raise the powerband. In a 4x4, the 3.0L's main complaint is the lack of low end torque. You'll have LESS torque down low with most of these add-ons. You have multiple real world choices

1. Leave the engine
2. Force some air into the engine (this will give you a desirable powerband)
3. Swap for a larger engine

But, its your vehicle so this is the last advice I throw out there.

Oh crap i never thoght of the frist part man... Is there anyway i could make a shroud at home??? Because when i get in the high RPMs i would be sucking up hot air and not cool air man......:icon_surprised:

There sure is!

There is a very good way to get really cold air into your engine! Put the stock stuff back on there! That child's play cai you bought isn't that at all! The only thing that will do for you is make more noise! Outside of the noise it lowers the horsepower and lowers the furl milage!

Yeah i might but thats fine for now dude. Im thinking of maby making one at home from a cone intake and Then getting a box thing around it.

I'd suggest leaving your aftermarket intake on for awhile. Check your mileage for a few tanks, and see how it drives on a normal basis. Eliminate the first full tank from consideration because you'll either be using the fast pedal more than normal because your truck sounds cooler, or you'll be freaking out about trying to get better mileage and going easier than normal on it. Don't let other people tell you what to do. While they have good intentions, it's your truck, draw your own conclusions from your own experiences. You can always turn it back to stock.
Personally, I have an MAC intake, and like it a lot. I even saw a slight improvement in my mileage, like 1-2 mpg. It's been on for almost 3 years now, and I've had ZERO issues.

The air temperature of the air under the hood while moving at anything about 10-15 miles per hour is pretty much exactly the same as the air outside of the engine compartment. Yeah, when you sit there at an idle, it's sucking in warm air, but otherwise, the air under the hood is always moving with air from the outside. I wouldn't worry too much about "sucking in hot air."

Thanks man see you understand and like you said learn its your truck.... I dont wanna be a downer but i took my ranger on some trials and it got stuff really fast!! Rangers (atleast my year 98-00) Need alot of work before there ready for trials and off roading for that dude!.

My scan gauge showed a 13 degree increase at highway speeds when I removed the box from my volant intake and ran an "open filter" from an enclosed box. Done on the same day with the engine at 195*.

Actual ambient temperature 49-50 degrees F
Volant Intake with Box at 60 mph 53 degrees F
Volant intake with box removed at 60 mph 66 degrees F

No idea what the stock box is but I assume it is close to the Volant with Box.
