I was lookin into 31 10.5 on my 3.0 while i was at the shop a guy said i should opt out for the 30/9.50s but im not sure. they are only an inch larger than my 235s should i just get a 255 or 265 instead or rock out one of the 30s?

How much power are you willing to sacrifice?

30's look good and don't sap too much bacon from the ol' 3.0. 31's would look better IMO, but those looks come with extra weight and more power sapped.

Do you have 3.73's or 4.10's, auto or 5 spd?

Your tire is less thn 29 inches tall. If it runs good and STOPS good keep that size tire. LOOKING GOOD in tires is most time BAD running and stopping.
Don't even give it a second thought! Put 235's (which are less than 29 inches tall) back on there.
It's all about running good and in particular stopping!

i have been thinking the same thing on my ranger. i did the torsion bar crank to level it out and it looks pretty damn good but it just made the 235s look way to small. but i only do some mild wheeling and mainly use it for work so i think im going to stay close to stock and run the 30X9.50

I have an auto and i believe 373s not sure about the ratios how much power would i lose with the 30s?

Maybe to some thats what matters jim, But to others the compromise can go either way, especially if they tend to drive slower, easier, and arent worried about gas or power, or have future plans etc. Remember not all 31's weigh and handle the same, and where stopping becomes slightly more difficult its not effected enough to negate the extra tire patch he'll have assisting his stop. (least thats the way i see it.) As far as his power, he can regear the truck if it doesnt have the gears right now, and it will be alright.

There is positives and negatives all day long. All you can do is weigh the options and make the choice you think is best.

Jim knows his stuff but with no offense meant he prefers things to stay the way ford made it and thats ok. To most people their car or truck is an identity and not so much just a way of getting around and they want it to look good. I love the way my truck looks with a 4 inch lift and 31 10.5s, do they cause problems? Yes they do depending on how you drive. Fords upper ball joints suck the big one and you will go through them with bigger tires and maybe a rack and pinion and power steering pump. They don't engineer their stuff to withstand to much abuse because they are small trucks. Do what you want its your truck, your the one that drives it every day and your the one that has to be happy with it. Hell put a giant wing on it and paint it neon yellow for all I care its your rig;) Stock vehicles are just a blank canvas to create something that makes you happy so enjoy:)

Hmmm Ok his ride came with a tire 90.79 inches around. His question was should he put a tire with a circumference of 94.25 or a tire with 97.4 inches of circumference on there.
Since each tire is near a 5% increase in size he will gain nearly 10% in travel for what the computer and speedometer are thinking, if he uses the 31" tire.
Now that 5 or 10% doesn't SOUND like much but the effect is the truck THINKS it is going uphill...everywhere it goes. AND since the truck is now using 10% LESS rpm to travel the same speed as with the regular tires there is less horsepower to keep the speed up.
I do agree guys like the way this or that looks on their rides. BUT they should be fully informed before making a decesion that the ONLY good thing about that decesion will be LOOKS! AND most other folks won't have a clue as to them LOOKS! Only the guy behind the wheel that CAN'T see them thinks it looks better.

ON the other hand, if taller tires are NEEDED to do this or that, then a gear change to make the rpm stay up is in order.
My 4 litre is out in the desert right now, waiting for my arrival. It is wearing the 30 inchers that came on it. It has the 4:11 in it that came on it. It spends it's entire time offroad! Never to see the pavement again. I've not had a single problem with it needing taller tires.

alright checked my gears and they are 4.10s which makes a difference for it. i drive it around town mostly not much off roading and if it is off roadin its not hardcore. ive been lookin at 30s now more so i feel it will give me the subtle lft i need for some of the areas that i go deep in holes and such. if id get the speedo computer reset for the tire size it wont make it act like it needs to run harder correct?

The 4.10's will work well with the 30's.

Not sure on the speedo correction.

Thanks Froggmann i looked around about the odometer comp reset they are asking roughly 250-350 for a reset i say F* to that unless its real bad but i live in nothing but hills anyways not like it matters!
