Blocks can cause axle wrap on hard acceleration and the like, which is where the spring tries to bend into an S shape, which is naturally hard on driveshaft joints and the like. Add a little wheel hop and things break.
And as far as add a leafs.... I'd never use them after one set tried to kill me by exploding from under a truck that I was taking the rear axle from. Got the U-bolts undone and the axle lowered away from the springs and was just moving away from that side when BLAM! and springs shot everywhere. If I want a stiffer pack or more arch, I play around with the composition of the leaf pack, adding/subtracting leafs, using leafs from different vehicles, etc.
