I am putting a 04 Explorer Flex Fuel 4.0 SOHC motor with 16K miles on it, into my '99 3.0l truck.
I started out with a 4.0 SOHC Non EGR out of a 03 Ranger, but the block turned out to be un-rebuildable.
(I already had the heads rebuilt when I found out about the block.) Nothing from the Explorer motor will work in the Ranger except the long block. I am thinking of putting everything from the 03 motor onto the 04 motor and using a 03 ECM.
Now the questions: Are the 04 Flex Fuel cams different enough to not be able to run w/o EGR?
Secondly, where would one find the cam profile info of these motors?
The Second Option would be to install the rebuilt heads onto this 04 block along with the 03 Cams. This is a lot of work I am trying to side step.

Only difference in Flex Fuel engines(that matter) are the size of the injectors and the computer software

When you run E85 you need to inject more fuel so need larger injectors, the computer must be programmed for injector size so it can do correct air/fuel mix for E85 OR Gasoline
So injectors are matched to the computer you will be using, doesn't matter if you never run E85
So if you are using a flex fuel computer use flex fuel injectors

The cams were the same for Ranger or Explorer, truck cams for more torque
Mustangs used different cams, less torque but more horsepower

EGR systems cooled cylinders to reduce NOX(toxic gas) emissions, as a by product the cooler cylinders were less likely to ping/knock on regular gas(87 octane)
But the 4.0l SOHC runs a knock sensor because of its higher compression ratio, 9.7:1, so it can run 87 octane fuel
So it can run with or without EGR system
Nothing to do with cams
More to do with computer, and its spark curve, and if it wants to see an EGR valve
If computer you use didn't use/need an EGR valve then don't use one
If computer does need an EGR system then use one

I am going with the above info, although I found last night on a Ford Factory Parts site, that Ford did make a change to the 4.0 cams in March of 2003 for the 2004 Ranger/Explorer motors.
I popped the valve covers off to look at the cam chains, and the oil pan to look for "timing chain shrapnel". It looks real good. Now I need some gaskets.
I am going to get a pair of new hydraulic chain tensioners from Ford being as it will never again be this easy to replace them.
