Transmissions.
What would be the best transmission for this project?
IMO you already have it, M5ODR1
I did a quick search to see if anyone makes any aftermarket bells to hang a Vulcan on a C4 and didn't come up with anything. IMO that would be darn near perfect for a trail truck that doesn't see a lot of highway miles.
the 3.0 SHO and 3.0 slo/Vulcan share the same bore and stroke, plus the bell pattern. that's where any similarity ends.
other than maybe a bolt or two nothing is interchangeable. except maybe the thermostat.
SHO heads will not bolt onto a slo.
the blocks are different.
SHO heads ( & the whole engine ) were designed and manufactured by Yamaha, they are similar to motorcycle heads.
( we buy valve adjusting shims at motorcycle shops. )
even the flywheel/flexplates are different because the SHO has 8 bolts on the crank.
which leads us to an interesting clutch situation:
the SHO has a 9.75" clutch disk that fits inside the 3.0 Vulcan bell pattern. too bad the flywheels can't be interchanged.
I don't know if the Vulcan flywheel could be re-drilled to fit the 9.75.
'ya got that backwards.Bigger clutch = more smoke????
Interesting history, thanks for that! I like reading about other ideas that were tried. If you want to get REALLY frisky with a transmission, could always adapt an old Mopar gyro torque to it. Seriously one of the coolest transmissions ever designed, and genuinely bulletproof by design.
My 1953 coronet has one. I hate autos, but this thing is COOL. They were apparently tremendous in dirt in their era and beyond.

The odd M6 and M4 four-speed semi-automatic transmissions
The odd M6 and M4 four-speed semi-automatic transmissions Thanks to Argent, Bill Watson, Sam Chase, and S. Berliner. The M6, sold as Presto-Matic, Fluidmatic, Tip-Toe Shift, Gyro-Matic, and Gyro-Torque, was a two-speed manual transmission with an electric 1:1 ratio unit (loosely called an...www.allpar.com
Haven't rolled it over yet. I need a pair of M12x75 bolts to properly attach it to the engine stand. I'll probably have a pair of those when I get home from work Tuesday.given the miles on it the timing chain slack doesn’t surprise me. Looks very clean inside, howd the bottom end look?
Something to think about. Wonder if I could take some measurements and drill a hole.I see the rear lifter bore on the passenger side has an oil channel for the sync unit. too bad there isn't a way to get the oil up the shaft
to the top bushing.
