3.0 to 4.0

Hey guys just wondering if I could get a little info.. what mods are needed to use a 4.0 from a 98 in a 02 with the 3.0. I have both complete trucks. Both run. The 98 has a completely junk frame, the 02 has a mint condition frame, looking to put the 4.0 into my 02. Thanks

Thanks. I knew it was alot, as long as everything will work I'm up for the task. What needs to be done about motor mounts? Will they bolt up? I plan on switching out the cab as well, basically it's a frame swap. Are the two frames identical, looking at them they seem to be.

I do believe so but not 100% about 75% sure they are on motor mounts just dropping in..

Frames are as long if they are both extended cab or single cab it will work but can't make a extended cab on a single cab frame.

Assumption: Same body style (e.g. both regular cab) & same drive (e.g. both 2wd manual)

Unfortunately, '02 is a 'cross over' year, so it might be relatively easy, it might not. Check if transmission has the OSS sensor or not. In the '02 I swapped, it had the rear axle VSS, so I was good. If it is has OSS and both are 4WD, keep the 3.0 transfer case and you are good; if this is 2wd, you need some new transmission parts which I am unfamiliar with...

You are going to swap transmission along with engine; no big deal (you planned it that way )

Easiest way to do this - go to wrecker and get: PATS, PCM, ignition tumbler, door locks and key from '02 Ranger with 4.0 and same transmission (key is the challenge). (I grabbed personality module too, better safe than sorry) Then just swap the 3.0 parts with the wrecker parts and electrical is out of way.

Engine mounts have different part numbers; not sure if they are actually different - I swapped them anyways.

Swap engine, swap transmission and you will have a running '02 with 4.0.

Thanks for the info, they are both 4wd extended cabs. Basically my easiest way out is going to be to put everything from the 4.0 onto the 3.0 frame including the cab. It's nothing in the near future anyways just looking into it for when the time comes. The 3.0 still runs and goes decent. The 4.0 is just rotted out and taking up space don't want to just trash it if I could use it, plus the truck only has 90k. Thanks again guys.
